‘Upset’ SP leader sets self afire, out of danger

A leader from Kanpur immolated himself in a bid to end his life outside the Vidhan Bhawan in Lucknow on Thursday, police said. They added that Narendra Singh alias ‘Pintu’, who suffered 30% burns, is undergoing treatment at a civil hospital and doctors said he was out of danger. Narendra Singh, who is also a businessman, is SP’s Kanpur unit vice president, and was reportedly upset over the party’s defeat in the Assembly election.

SHO of Hazratganj Shyam Babu Shukla said the police are yet to record Singh’s statement.

In a separate incident, a 40-year-old man allegedly consumed a poisonous substance at his residence at Vibhuti Khand area of Lucknow. Naresh Kumar is undergoing treatment at Lohia hospital and doctors said his condition is stable. Naresh hails from Ayodhya and runs a tea-stall in Lucknow.

SHO of Vibhuti Khand Ashish Mishra said that they were told that Kumar has uploaded a video in which he is purportedly heard saying that he took the step following the SP defeat.
