Torrential rain lashed parts of Tamil Nadu’s Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, and Chengalpattu districts on Tuesday, leading to severe waterlogging. Several videos of residents tackling the traffic congestion in Chennai emerged on social media.
The viral video shows a flyover turned into a parking lot. The video first shows vehicles parked in two rows, making the flyover one-way. A large number of vehicles can also be seen parked on another flyover, allowing the commuters to pass by smoothly. Sharing the video, an X handle @IndianTechGuide wrote, “Chennai people decided to park their cars on the bridge to avoid flooding. One way to use flyovers.”

Shared on October 16, the video garnered over 739,05,000 views as many social media users hailed the residents, highlighting the poor management by the government. A user wrote, “Looking at how Chennai, Bangalore and Mumbai are faced with frequent urban flooding … it would be a great idea for builders to come up first floor parking in apartments going forward and also build more multistorey car parks or parking garages in prime locations.” Another user commented, “The fine for doing so is INR 1000 but this is WAY better than losing your car to floodwaters when nature reclaims what belongs to her.”
“Appreciate the forward thinking Govt to build flyovers to help people during floods,” a third user wrote.
According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai, the depression over the Bay of Bengal is likely to cross north Tamil Nadu-south Andhra Pradesh coasts between Puducherry and Nellore, close to north of Chennai on Thursday early morning.
