Women have shattered various stereotypes regarding jobs and have gained employment in professions that were considered to be the sphere of men. Driving a cab is one such profession that is usually associated with men.
So, a man was pleasantly surprised when he came across a woman cab driver in Kolkata and shared her story on Facebook. Param Kalyan Singh shared he booked a cab to Lake Mall and a woman called him to know about the pickup location. As the journey started, he was impressed by her and asked her for her educational background. The woman, Dipta Ghosh, said she has a BTech (Electrical) degree and had worked for six years in various companies.
However, Ghosh’s father passed away in 2020 leaving her, her mother and her younger sister behind. She said she found that all the suitable jobs required her to move out of Kolkata and she didn’t want to leave her mother and sister back.
So, she decided to get a commercial license and bought an Alto car. She has been driving for Uber since 2021. Singh wrote Ghosh is quite happy with the job and earns about ₹40,000 a month driving about six to seven hours daily for six days a week.
The post has received more than 3,000 likes since being shared and netizens appreciated the woman’s courage.
“Respectfully doing her job, excellent example of true women empowerment. It feels good to know such life stories,” commented a user. “Very nice and encouraging,” said another. “This is called self empowerment,” appreciated a third. “I know it feels like girls are empowering, but if the same post was about a boy,all of us be like-Ahh unsuccessful man. That’s the issue,” another person wrote.
