Kolkata has come to a halt as relentless monsoon rains have submerged large parts of the city. Roads have turned into rivers, neighborhoods are grappling with waterlogging, and businesses are struggling to function amid the chaos. Social media is awash with videos capturing the disruption, cars stranded in water, offices rendered inaccessible, and homes slowly filling up with floodwater.
Between all this, one video has captured attention, but not because it shows devastation. The video shows a snake swimming through a flooded backyard with a fish in its mouth, a scene that quickly went viral.
Shared on Instagram by Atreyee Mitra, the video shows the snake effortlessly gliding through the water while clutching its catch. The post was humorously captioned, “Just Kolkata flood things,” a nod to the city’s uncanny ability to find lightness even in difficult times. “Kolkata and its little perks, right before Durga Pujo,” the caption adds, making the timing even more memorable as the city gears up for its biggest festival.
Internet users quickly turned the clip into comic relief, drawing laughs at the city’s love for fish. A user wrote, “Even snakes also likes fish…. speciality of kollkata!!” Another user quipped, “Shaap also likes Maach bhaat just like us.” A third person identified the snake and wrote, “Just kolkata flood things? Checkered keelback snakes feed primarily on fishes. Nothing new. You’ll find them in every pond out there.”
A fourth individual wrote, “Bengalis and their love for fish transcends species.”
Kolkata’s flooding comes after a heavy downpour that wreaked havoc across the city. Other viral clips show the scale of the chaos: a Rolls-Royce Ghost stranded in the middle of a waterlogged street, and employees wading through flooded roads just to reach work.
