What causes bioluminescent water?

According to National Geographic, bioluminescence is a natural phenomenon produced by a chemical reaction within a living organism. Most bioluminescent organisms are found in the ocean. These bioluminescent marine species include fish, bacteria, and jellies. The appearance of bioluminescent light differs, depending on the habitat and organism in which it is found.

The functions of bioluminescence have yet to be discovered. However, according to the National Ocean Service, sea creatures typically use bioluminescence to warn or evade predators, lure or detect prey, and communicate between members of the same species.
