‘This can only happen in India’: Australian podcaster awestruck as Uber driver navigates Mumbai floods to get her to airport

Bree Steele, an Australian podcaster, was amazed by her Uber driver navigating flooded Mumbai streets, declaring Indians as the “toughest and chillest” people.

MumbaiThe video was shared on her Instagram.

During the torrential downpour in Mumbai, as roads turned to rivers, an Australian podcaster hailed Indians as the world’s most laid-back after her Uber driver navigated her through flooded streets to reach the airport on time.

Bree Steele, an Australian podcaster and content creator, found herself both amused and awestruck as, according to the video shared on her Instagram, her Uber driver skillfully navigated her to the airport at 3 am, despite the downpour and flooded Mumbai roads. In the reel, she declared, “I’m convinced that Indian people are the toughest and chillest people in the world”.

Almost incredulous at her driver’s skill, Bree exclaimed, “This can only happen in India!”

“The water was like, up to here,” Bree exclaimed, gesturing at an imaginary chest-high water. Her Uber driver nonchalantly replied with a casual “Koi baat nahin” (No problem). She then showed a clip of her adventure, sitting on the backseat as water splashed into the cab, drenching her.

“My Uber driver just went through literal flood waters,” exclaimed Steele in her video. At one point, Bree couldn’t help but question the safety of driving on such severely waterlogged roads. The footage captured extensive water levels breaching apartment gates.

Reacting to the video, one user joked, “Reason why all dads leave for the airport 4 hrs ago.” Another user shared, “I once cried in an Uber taxi while trying to reach Mumbai airport. Was stuck in terrible traffic and my driver just informed we will probably miss the flight. Big tear drops were out without sound (I was to go home). The driver saw the tears. He drove like no tomorrow and even forgot that he had ended the ride mid way. Didn’t even take the full amount of the ride cause he had fun and I was more important.”

A third user commented, “The way he said”nikal nikal nikal”, 😍😍, that is the best connection with the vehicle we own, I bet he must have felt proud of himself and his vehicle at the end of the tunnel.” And a fourth chimed in saying, “Titanic could have been saved if the captain was from Mumbai.”

She praised locals for managing major junctions and guiding commuters through the traffic and floodwaters at midnight as well.
