Monsoon rains have brought relief across the country, lowering temperatures. However, in Assam, rains have caused severe flooding, affecting both humans and wildlife. Many animals have perished or been trapped. A video going viral on social media shows a man rescuing an elephant calf from a flood-swollen river.
In the video shared by @brut.india on Instagram, the elephant calf can be seen stuck in the middle of the river with strong currents. A man is seen holding the calf. Other people gathered around can be seen prepping and extending efforts to rescue them from the rising river.
The six-week-old elephant had been separated from its mother while trying to cross the fast-flowing Aie River near Chirang, reported Viral Press. The footage from June 30 shows the calf struggling to keep its trunk above water as it approached a bridge.
It was eventually brought to safety, with a rope around its waist, but was frightened by the crowd. The baby elephant was then wrapped in a warm rug at a wildlife rehabilitation center.

The report also mentioned that experts have not been able to find its mother. The Assam Forest Department stated that efforts to reunite the calf with its herd were unsuccessful.
The calf is now under veterinary care and will be sent to Manas National Park for further rehabilitation before being released into the wild.
Netizens praised the real-life heroes for rescuing the baby elephant. Reacting to the video, an Instagram user said, “There is humanity alive ..kudos to this brave man.” Another user said, “not all heroes wear capes.” And a third commented, “good people still exist, this made my day.”
