Zakir Hussain, widely regarded as one of the finest tabla maestros in the world, passed away at the age of 73.
According to a statement from his family, he died from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a lung condition, at a hospital in San Francisco. Hussain, a four-time Grammy award recipient, was honoured with Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian award. Through his exceptional performances, he elevated the tabla to the status of a globally cherished solo instrument, often taking centre stage in concerts.
