With an elevation of almost 8,848 metres, Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world. Its snowy peaks and ragged terrain continues to inspire awe in people around the world.
Now a 2021 video that gives a 360-degree view of the Everest summit is going viral across social media platforms. The video was taken by mountaineer Gao Li on May 12, 2021. He shared it on Instagram on June 2, 2021.
While sharing this clip, Li wrote, “Hi,8848.86!Amazing 360-degree summit views of Everest! I shot it at the summit in 12th,May.It is my second time to summit Everest with @mingma.g, the leader of Imagine Nepal.The first time i summited,is 14th May,2018”.
In the recent years, many mountaineers have flagged concerns about pollution across the icy landscape of Everest. In May this year, Everest Today (@EverestToday), a portal dedicated to Everest climbing, tweeted a video that showed the remains of abandoned tents littered across Camp IV, which is located at the height of 8848.86 metres above sea level. The video prompted a discussion about sustainable climbing regulations and waste management.
As per an estimate by National Geographic, each climber on Everest generates around eight kilograms of waste that includes abandoned food containers, tents, and empty oxygen tanks. Therefore, the increase in the number of climbers on Everest has directly led to the increase in garbage left behind by the mountainers. The harsh climatic conditions make waste removal and management particularly difficult.
