Every year billions of dollars exchange hands across the globe in illegal narcotics trade, with a huge amount concentrated in Latin American countries like Argentina and Mexico. However, technological advancements have forced drug traffickers to update their tricks to evade arrest as found out by authorities in Argentina.

Argentinian authorities recently arrested a woman who pretended to be pregnant to smuggle a huge cache of cannabis. However, the trick failed to hoodwink the officials and the ‘heavily pregnant’ woman with a ‘marijuana’ baby bump was taken into custody.

National Gendarmerie, the country’s major border force, carried out a surprise raid in association with the Ministry of Security of the Nation on Wednesday and arrested two Argentinian citizens carrying cannabis weighing over 5 kg.

The police busted the couple, who were travelling by a bus, at a border checkpoint in an area known as Valle de Uco near Mendoza, close to Argentina’s border with Chile.

Patricia Bullrich, Argentina’s Minister for Security, tweeted photos of the bust, saying: “She made a belly out of paste, hid 15 cannabis bricks inside it and faked a pregnancy before trying to take it from Mendoza to Santa Cruz.” Photos of the weighing machine indicated the fake bump was over 4.5 kg.

Recently, a woman was arrested for hiding drugs in her wheelchair. In another bizarre case, marijuana was found concealed in carrots part of a commercial shipment.
