Indians and their civic sense, or the lack of it, have long been debated. From overcrowded trains to roadside littering and road rage incidents, such stories have become all too common. Recently, another incident caught on social media has added to the conversation, this time from the Wagah-Attari border.
A video going viral on Instagram shows a Russian woman tourist capturing an elderly man littering at the site. He is seen sitting in the stands next to the tourist, eating an ice cream cone, and then throwing the wrapper under someone else’s seat. The video then shifts focus to the tourist, who is seen shaking her head in disbelief.
The clip, uploaded on Instagram by Jist News, has reignited the debate around civic sense in public spaces.
The video quickly gained attention online, drawing sharp reactions from netizens, many of whom pointed out that such actions tarnish the country’s image in front of foreign visitors.
Many netizens took to the comments to share their views. A user wrote, “We act as if no one’s watching and then we criticize the outcome ourselves. Civic sense is clearly declining in the country.”
Another user wrote, “Shaming us worldwide…sorry madam…here people don’t have civics sense.” A third person commented, “Ismein Reigniting the topic ka kya hai , its period ” Hum Indians ko civic sense ” aaj bi nai hai…puraa duniya hasthe hai aaj bi.”
A fourth individual wrote, “Its next to impossible to convince elder people not to litter around and use dustbin! Forget that even young ones dont understand. I wont blame the elderly people so much.” A fifth individual added, “This is very common in India even the rich educated people do this!”
