The Taiwan metro has bestowed the position of station master to a very special being, a ginger cat named Mikan.
The Taiwan News reported that this year the Kaohsiung Mass Rapid Transit, a metro network that covers the metropolitan area of Kaohsiung with 37 stations, completed 15 years since its launch. Interestingly, the metro line’s 15th anniversary coincided with Children’s Day. To mark both these occasions, a famous ginger cat named Mikan was promoted to the position of honorary ‘station master’.
Mikan mostly puts up at the Ciaotou Sugar Refinery metro station. Over the years, it has gained celebrity status amongst commuters and local authorities. Mikan’s Instagram account has over 56,000 followers.
On Tuesday, a popular Twitter account named cats with jobs (@CatWorkers) tweeted about Mikan’s promotion. This tweet gathered over 40,000 likes. Commenting on it, a Twitter user wrote, “Please let me know if he needs an assistant 🥰”. Another person said, “Dare I say… stationMEOWSTER? 😄”.
Mikan is not the only cat who is ‘employed’ at a train station. George, a ginger tom, has the position of a “senior mouse catcher” at the Stourbridge Junction railway station in England. Similarly, Tama was a female calico cat who was appointed as a station master and operating officer at the Kishi Station on the Kishigawa Line in Kinokawa in Japan.
