Balancing on a surfboard is a struggle for many – now imagine a bunch of dogs doing it together. In a recent viral video, nearly a dozen dogs, from various breeds, were spotted riding a single longboard near San Diego’s famous Ocean Beach, fondly known as Dog Beach.
Shared by ABC News on Instagram, the video has fetched thousands of views and evoked mixed reactions online. While many viewers were instantly charmed by the sight of the “athletic pups” catching waves, others questioned whether it was safe or ethical.
In the caption, ABC News wrote: “Nearly a dozen athletic pups made a splash at San Diego’s Dog Beach after the dogs were spotted riding a wave together on a single surfboard.”
One amused user commented, “I’m embarrassed, I can’t even stay on the board long enough to stand up and balance, and these 27 dogs are actually surfing I’m done!”
Another wrote, “One of the best videos I’ve seen all weekend!” A third person chimed in, “I would love my dog take have the experience lol.”
But not everyone was on board with the idea. Critics raised concerns about the dogs’ safety, especially in unpredictable ocean conditions. “Worried what would happen to them if a huge wave knocked them off,” one person noted. Another added, “Dangerous and irresponsible. Using animals for human entertainment. Not cool.”
San Diego in California is a haven for dog lovers, boasting several beaches where dogs can roam freely without a leash. One of the most iconic spots is Ocean Beach, famously dubbed Dog Beach, which holds the distinction of being among the first official off-leash dog beaches in the United States. Other well-loved destinations include Fiesta Island in Mission Bay Park, where dogs are welcome in most areas, and the quieter, more tucked-away Coronado Dog Beach, perfect for a more peaceful outing.
