70-year-old flamingo lays her first egg, becomes auntie-to-be at UK nature reserve

Ben Marshall, the manager at Pensthorpe, couldn’t believe it when Gertrude laid her egg. “Flamingos usually live around 40 years, so for Gertrude to lay an egg at 70 is incredible!” he told the BBC. Even though her egg won’t hatch, seeing Gertrude act like a mom is wonderful.

While Gertrude’s egg isn’t going to hatch, many other flamingos at the reserve are expecting baby flaminglets very soon. “Gertrude is very protective of the little ones in the flock,” Ben added. “She’ll be the best aunt and babysitter for all the new babies!”

Gertrude’s story has brought a lot of joy to everyone at Pensthorpe, showing that nature is full of lovely surprises.
