Huawei seems to have stolen Apple’s thunder by introducing the world’s first tri-fold smartphone — Mate XT Ultimate Edition just hours after the launch of the iPhone 16 series. Featuring a tablet-sized 10.2-inch foldable 3K resolution foldable OLED screen the Mate XT, when fully folded can be used like a 6.4-inch smartphone. When partially opened, it transforms into a 7.9-inch foldable smartphone, and when fully opened, it turns into a big 10-inch tablet.
Unlike most foldable smartphones, which include two screens, a foldable primary screen, and a cover display, Huawei with its tri-fold technology uses just a single screen, which folds at two levels. With a starting price of 1,99,99 Yuan (approximately Rs 2,35,000), it’s definitely on the expensive side, but there is nothing like this in the market. Currently available for pre-order starting today, the phone will go on sale on September 20, and the availability is being limited to China.
Weighing at 298 g, when fully unfolded, the device is just 3.6mm thick, making it one of the thinnest smartphones on the market.
To achieve this, Huawei has incorporated some cutting-edge technology, including an ultra-tough laminated structure and the use of non-Newtonian fluid. The phone has two hinges with an inner fold that resists compression and an outer fold that resists tension, ensuring the hinge can hold its position and move seamlessly in a single direction.
Huawei has not mentioned the chip that powers the Mate XT Ultimate Edition. The chip is likely to be based on the in-house Kirin 9010 and the phone ships with HarmonyOS 4.2. The phone comes with 16 GB of RAM with 256/512 or 1 TB of internal storage.
The camera unit on the Mate XT consists of a 50 MP main camera, a 12 MP ultra-wide-angle lens, and a 12 MP telephoto lens with 5.5x optical zoom support. There is also an 8 MP selfie camera at the front, placed within the punch-hole cutout.
To ensure an all-day battery, despite being just 3.6mm thin, the phone packs a massive 5600mAh silicon carbon battery, which is supposed to be the world’s thinnest battery ever used on a smartphone. The phone also supports 66W fast wired and 50W wireless charging.
Despite the US sanctions, Huawei has been making some of the best smartphones with cutting-edge innovations, including independent chip design. However, the company won’t be able to sell these smartphones outside China.
