FC Barcelona on Wednesday made it official, former Bayern Munich and Germany manager Hansi Flick will take over as the men’s team coach.
The appointment comes after Xavi, who had been at helm since the 2021/22 season, left at the end of the 2023/24 season.
In a statement, the club described Flick as “a man well known for his teams’ high pressing, intense and daring style of play which has brought him great success at club level and international level, winning pretty much all there is to win in the world of football.”
Previously, Flick had been the German national team head coach for over two years but was sacked during September last year after a string of a disappointing results that saw the team being knocked out of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in the group stages.
Before his stint with the national team, Flick had coached Bayern to a treble winning season, only the second in their history. It saw the German giants claim their sixth UCL title, going undefeated throughout the 2019/20 season.
Speaking in a video posted by Barca on X, Flick said: “First of all I would like to say thank you to everyone (involved). It’s a big honour and also a dream for me to sign my contract here in Barcelona, to work for this amazing club, and I’m happy to start.
“The club is unbelievable. The hours I’m here in Barcelona, it’s amazing because everyone here in the club loves this club and tries to give their best so they have success. The philosophy they have is similar to mine – ball possession and really attacking football, these are the things I love. I won some titles with Bayern Munich and my hunger is really big for titles. I would like to stay on this path with Barcelona and I think we can achieve a lot together,” Flick added.
Barca were crowned champions in the subsequent season, but they failed to mount a serious challenge in the recently concluded season, surrendering their title to rivals Real Madrid.
