India vs England 3rd Test Day 3 Highlights: Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett survive the day as England lead India by 2 runs at Stumps

About 8 mins of play remaining in the day as the England openers Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley make their way out to the middle. India are in a huddle while Jurel still has the gloves as Pant is still not fit enough to keep. 

Archer in and Archer strikes as India are bundled out for 387. The scores are level and we are back to square one. Washington gone for 21. This is a rare phenomenon. England players walk back and it'll be the last 2 innings that will decide this match.

And Washington with a single which means that scores are now level. And Woakes has struck. Bumrah gets an edge and that's a simple catch to Jamie Smith. India down to last man.

Jofra Archer continues and Washington Sundar has a chance to get away but he turns down the run for the first 2 deliveries. Does the same thing for the third ball as well as the crowd starts to get restless for the lack of action. Finally takes a single off the fourth and Bumrah successfully navigates the last couple of deliveries.

Well, Akash Deep slammed one of Archer for a six, and it seems like he is quite comfortable facing pace. As we update, Aakash Deep has fallen here. It was a fuller one from Carse and Deep tried to guide the ball towards the third man, and Brook took a lovely catch diving towards his right. India are eight down and it might be time for Sundar to take his opportunities with shots. With 30 minutes to go, this is probably not the time England's top order wants to come out and bat and face Bumrah. Interesting 30-minute passage coming up folks.

Well the umpire got a couple wrong in the middle. Chris Woakes' inswingers hit Akash Deep's pads twice, but Deep reviewed both the decisions, and the umpire has given it out on both occasions and on review on both occasions, the ball was missing the stumps and Deep has survived. As per Jadeja's wicket,, he has the tendency of getting down on the leg-side like he did today yet again. It was also a good catch from Jamie Smith. Well opening here for England, they can close it out tonight, but we have to see it has been that sort of innings for them.

So far, India has lost just three wickets today. It is not that pitch did not have things to work with, it is England's bowling which looked lacklustre and once again Gautam Gambhir's tactics to deepen the batting line-up. The likes of Nitish and Sundar in the same line up is not a thing too many would have expected alongside Jadeja, but they did come up with the ploy, and given the game situation if India comes to bat out tomorrow morning again, they can easily add another 70-80 runs. However, as we update, Woakes has picked up Ravindra Jadeja. 

One of the out-of-the-box things India could do here is they can try and level the scores or take a 10-15 runs lead and declare and expose English top order to Jasprit Bumrah. Not that India are too keen on taking calls as such in the past but it is kind of things captains over the years have tried. If India can manage to pick up few early wickets before close of play that will dent the confidence of England. Also England will be worried about their bowling. They have looked poor through the series and batters will have that in mind when putting up a score in the third innings.

We have reached the water break for the final time today. It has been another magnificent play for India, and it has not been helped by England's poor tactics as well. Jadeja especially, has looked more assured and batting with more comfort. To be fair to England if someone who is not following the game would have been told India is about 200 runs ahead in this game, with the tactics used by Stokes they would have believed it. If England manages to lose this game, they will look back at this passage where they have let away India well that has happened many times let's say another time and be kicking themselves.

Jadeja has gone into the 70s here out of nowhere. This is turning into a lovely patch for Jadeja in his batting career. While he has the ability to churn out big big runs but there are times back at home where he struggles with the pitches with the bat like others, but when presented situations to bat like a proper batter the left-hander has done exceptional job always and today again his pacing of the innings has been quite magnificent. He countered when he had to and waited when he had to, and now he is in a good space in his innings, batting at a lovely Test match tempo.

We are almost an hour into the session and we have not seen either of Archer, Woakes, or Carse while Stokes has bowled well and picked up a wicket. England should wrap India up to gain some advantage. Any batter who walks into the middle will be quite vulnerable, but Sundar now has faced over 20 deliveries he has batted on both ends, and he will have an understanding of what the pitch is doing. Not that it means the bowlers will not pick wickets but it did suck out the advantage England were carrying before. Quite a strange passage of play this hard to understand where this game ishead towards.

This is an important innings for Sundar. Maybe he could have gotten away with a low score in the previous game, but today, with the game situation, he needs to chip in with 40-50 runs here. Jadeja is in, and he is used to the pace of the conditions, and he has the ability to bat longer and can tire the bowlers. All Sundar needs to do is support him for a bit. As of now, Stokes is banging the ball into the wicket and Root is bowling from the other end, although Nitish has fallen, but it does seem like England are letting India away. Both Sundar and Jadeja will just dead bat this spell and be happy about it.

We have two left-handers in the middle. Sundar has just walked into the crease unless Archer, Carse or Woakes, or all of them are injured, it is hard to figure out why Root is operating to Sundar at this point in his innings with the ball relatively new. While out-of-the-box captaincy has its place in the game but it seems like India is being let away here. What England needs to do here is look for wickets only then way they win this game. Archer has had quite a bit of a break spell from him here, might be it for England, but this is how Stokes is seeing it which is quite puzzling.

Well, that wicket has reaffirmed a couple of deliveries we have seen in Jofra Archer in the morning. The ball is keeping a bit up and down now, and this session with that wicket of Nitish, it has increased. If this continues to happen, we will have a result in this game. Even India manages to match England in terms of score here in the first innings, it will be a tricky proposition for England to decide what a good total on this surface is for them to defend. While the wicket will help them and so will the Indian bowlers in third innings and Bumrah would love to exploit the unevenness from the end Stokes is operating.

Joe Root is bowling a spell here. There was a bit of speculation if it was an end change thing, but he has bowled two bouncers and seems like he is going to continue. This is quite a strange tactic from Stokes. There is still a possibility England can reduce India under the score they have got, but starting with Root is quite an odd move. As we update well, what do we know Ben Stokes picked up Nitish Kumar Reddy. It was ball hit on the hard length and ball kept rising and Nitish who was two minds whether to play or leave, in the end as the ball kept rising took the glove and the keeper completed the catch much needed breakthrough for England.

Both players are out in the middle, and well we have a surprise with the ball and it is Joe Root who has started the session. The captaincy decisions from Stokes are getting more and more out of the box. It is looking like he is scratching his head and looking around for wicket-tackers.

That's Tea despite all the drama that has unfolded with running between wickets, India has lost only one scalp, which means it is another session in the day which has belonged to India. England have yet not just to have a session but also a brief passage of 30-40 minutes to their name. Although either side of Lunch they had and more ruthless and cold-hearted team would have killed India in that passage for whatever the reason, England could not both Nitish and Jadeja once they got settled in, batted quite well. The new ball was England's get-out-of-jail card in this game, and they have not made the most of it. In fact, they have not picked any wickets with the second new ball 10 overs into it. There has been too much chopping and changing from Stokes, and hoping something will give but nothing is happening. There have been too many times in the series where Stokes was short of ideas on how to enforce a wicket. A part of it had to do with the bowling he had and a part of it is England are treated with their own game while Australia are a good side apart from Travis Head not everyone is as punishing but this young Indian side most of the batters if the tide turns they can score at quite a ruthless pace for this format of the game. That is a huge difference of playing on flat tracks

Jadeja punches one through covers, and the couple of runs bring up the 50-run partnership between this duo. It has been a much-needed partnership. They did have their moments did the duo but in the end they got there. These are the partnerships which will take India closer and closer to England's score. Now that both of them have got starts at least one of them should look and bat till the end. Jadeja has looked lot more comfortable than Nitish, but the latter too has some exhilarating shot range to bat with the tail if it comes to that. As much as both have batted well England should also be kicking themselves for the chances they have rueed.

The running between the wickets in this partnership itself is becoming quite a highlight package for the broadcasters to throw out or a reel on Instagram. At first, it was quite panicky, now it has become a bit amusing. Both are among the fastest runners but they are not on the same wavelength at the moment. Nitish is trying to take a tap and run and get away, but Jadeja sees the risky side of things, it has happened quite too often. Nitish is someone who loves to keep rotating the strike and build his innings through. Jadeja, on the other hand although is quick has the pacing or innings construction of his own which is quite puzzling to understand at times

One thing England has to do in this game, or even in the previous Test, is to avoid losing crucial moments. Test matches are all about winning those crucial junctures and building the pressure from there on. They had an opportunity today morning when they were stringing maidens and ended up doing not much after the passage. India were in a bit of a pickle after lunch, and India gave opportunities, and they did not pick them. Here they are with the new ball, and it has been quite easy and Woakes not operating is a huge relief to both these batters. Carse has been quite inconsistent with his accuracy, which is letting the Indians away here at the moment.

The second new ball has been taken here. And it is Carse and Archer who are starting at the moment. It is quite an interesting call from Stokes not to use Woakes with this new ball, Is it a sign of what to come for the next few Tests? Only time will tell. But Woakes, not having the new ball, reduces his threat by half. With two batters who are not as polished as the top order, Woakes nibbling the ball around the fourth stump would have been a Test. It is not that Carse is a bad bowler, but he just did not look in rhythm in this Test match. Having said that, the strike bowler is Archer, a lot of damage has to come from that end.

It has been England's hour. Although they could only take one wicket they have definitely created some amount of panic in the Indian dressing room for a while. Both Nitish and Jadeja the way they were running it did looked like someone was going to get out, but thankfully, it did not happen from Indian perspective, as time went on, the partnership settled down. However, the second new ball will be taken now, and we might see that comfort dynamic shift a bit. Archer coming in and bowling at 145 is quite an ask for the greatest of batters, and only time will tell how Jadeja and Nitish will deal with the challenge.

New ball coming up will be quite crucial in this game. If England manages to pick one wicket with that second new ball, they will be into India's lower order, and facing Archer at that pace and rhythm will be quite an uphill task for the Indian lower batters; hence,how that passage goes will be quite crucial. As the old ball has been dealt with nicely after the initial jitters, this partnership has gone through. Jadeja especially, has settled into his innings nicely in the middle. There is not a lot on offer on this still wicket, both this batters and Sundar are capable to score runs but India would be hoping that these two do most of the scoring and eat away at that deficit.

Jofra Archer has bowled quite a bit of burst here. He was quick. Both Jadeja and Nitish did quite well to keep him away, but they did panic as the runout opportunities showed. As for now, Stokes has taken Archer out of the attack as the new ball is six overs away. We might see England delay that new ball for a couple of overs just to give Archer a bit of a break and make sure he is ready to steam in at full tilt. Carse has come into attack and time and again through this Test, we have seen Carse let the pressure go away, and England at this juncture in time don't want that to happen at all costs.

Well, we had another incident with the running here, and Nitish could have been run out yet again. This can go either way from here. England had a couple of chances and they missed, and this partnership can make them pay or this might be signs of the panic as team India are going through, and we might see one of the collapses this team has been used to in recent times. As per Nitish since his ton in MCG he has gone quiet, and this is a very important innings for him with the bat. Not just for him but the team too needs him to chip in with a healthy contribution here.

Well we had an incident here Ravindra Jadeja was hit on the pads and he tried to take a quick single meanwhile Archer was appealing and Nitish was caught in no man's land India got away there as no wicket fell it should have been the end of Nitish but Pope misses the stumps and not many English fielders caught on to what was happening as Jadeja's LBW was pretty close in the end no harm done. Looks like India is panicking a bit. These are the vulnerable moments in Test matches in recent times. India has collapsed, and if Nitish had gotten run out, that would have been three wickets in no time. India needs to be a bit cautious here.

KL Rahul drove one to short-cover and took a single to get to his 100, and the following ball, a drive which was half-hearted against Shoaib Bashir, took the edge to the slip fielder. Well, while India would be happy about Rahul's landmark, they have lost two wickets on either side of Lunch with still long way to go. The circumstances under which Pant got out meant that Rahul had to make this a big score. Dismissing two set batters, England are in this game out of nowhere. Nitish Kumar Reddy has walked into the middle, and he, alongside Jadeja, need to stem the flow of momentum here intially.

It has been a near-perfect session for India until the wicket of Rishabh Pant, but there are no ifs and buts in this game. Jadeja will be coming into the middle. India needs another good partnership here to take this game if England manages to pick one more that will put India in a bit of a pickle.

Apart from this being the 15th five-wicket haul of his career, this is the 13th time Bumrah has got one in a Test played away from home. He thus broke the record for most five-fors by an Indian in overseas Tests. It was previously held by Kapil Dev, who had 12 in 66 Tests, Bumrah has 13 in 35.

When Mohammed Siraj passed on the ball to Bumrah to celebrate his five-wicket haul milestone, the Indian ace pacer had a muted celebration, which led to speculations about him being unhappy with the proceedings. Clearing all the air, Bumrah said he was too ‘tired’ to celebrate.

“The reality is that I was tired. There was no happiness factor missing. I bowled for a long time, and sometimes I get tired,” said a satisfied Bumrah with a smile during the press conference after the end of Day 2.

“I’m not 21-22 anymore that I’ll jump around. I was happy I contributed—other than that, I just wanted to get back to my mark and bowl the next ball,” he added.

Well, Lunch will taste bitter for both Rahul and Pant. It was going extremely well, and the only way they could have ruined the good position they had was by shooting themselves in the foot, which is what they did with that runout. It was Pant's call more than it was Rahul's to take a tight single and help Rahul get to a century; however, Ben Stokes picked the right end it was a direct hit. An unnecessary wicket right after a fabulous session. However, despite the wicket, the session will belong to India. We will be right after the break, after Lunch do stay with us.

This session kept getting worse and worse for England. They had a passage about 30 minutes into the session where they were bowling tight overs and could have picked up a wicket, but they let that away, and a lot has to go down to how poorly Carse bowled.

Playing on good pitches is a good thing wherever it happens in the world in this format of the game, but to support that, teams need to have the bowling to pick 20 wickets. While England does have some competent names in the squad, they just don't seem to have a method or know-how of how to pick 20 wickets in a Test match. One of the things teams with less experience in bowling attacks do tend to give away is after having a good passage with the ball they tend to get stuck and let the partnership runaway. Time and again through this series England have let their advantage away with the ball after being in the good positions. Which are the signs that this team lacks bowlers whose roles are defined in the game

Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul have put on quite a partnership here, which is eating away at England's total. This is the moment in this game where England have to strike if both these two come to bat again after Lunch, India will be quite confident that they will take the lead in the game. Also, with the changes that India made or the combination they are willing to go with, they do bat quite deep as we have seen it did bear fruit in Edgbaston when Gill was able to build partnerships with Sundar and Jadeja in the lower order, and Rahul or Pant can do the same again today.

Rishabh Pant's other hand it hit here thanks to Ben Stokes' bumper, which Pant tried to pull and got hurt he did take some treatment but things seem to be fine for now. With both hands hurt this is getting a bit tricky for Pant. There is quite a bit of gap between third and fourth Test but his contribution in this Test is quite important especially if India has something to chase in the final innings. If he is unfine it might be time Pant walks back and gets some treatment and come later to bat. As per England seeing that they might be looking to target Pant with that bumper more and more. The lack of a bowler who can make the difference in terms of impact is hurting England. India has Bumrah, and when they did not have Bumrah, Akash Deep could pick up that role. But for England Chris Woakes coming in after James Anderson-Stuart Broad era had to pick up that role which he did decently well last summer but this time around, he is struggling to deliver the goods. To be fair to be him the wickets have been flatter than usual, and the ball is not moving as it did in the past; however, there have been times when he struggled to contain runs which is a cardinal sin for someone who is as experienced as him.

England had their spell where they could have turned this hour into theirs, but nevertheless India were too good, and Carse was too loose in those initial few overs he bowled. Despite being in pain, Pant is batting quite bravely, meanwhile KL Rahul at the other end has started to look even better. It is time Stokes considers bringing in tweaker Bashir into the attack. The pitch is offering nothing to the seamers there was a bit of uneven bounce while that is not to prominent since we are into day three it might be the signs of things to come from the nursery end. It has been India's hour all in all.

Brydon Carse has started a bit loosely here. He is spraying the ball a bit all over and KL Rahul is obliging the gifts and punishing the deliveries for boundaries. After the initial tight burst from Archer and Woakes, this has been a let away for India, and this has been a pattern throughout the series for England. If it was Josh Tongue in the first two games, it is Carse today. In a game where the scoring has gone at three's Brydon Carse has almost gone at five's in this game. The momentum has certainly shifted for India in the last 10-15 minutes runs are coming in lot more fluently. 

KL Rahul gets a boundary and ends the streak against Chris Woakes, and the runs have started to flow more at a pleasant pace since. This has been one of those games where the run scoring has been more old school. Long passages of runs not coming, and suddenly a few boundaries come by to keep the rate up. Stokes has brought in Brydon Carse here, given the nature of the surface, we might see Bashir too coming into attack early. Once again, given the slowness of the surface, India does have an upper hand with two spinners in this game, but they have to make the most of them in the third innings.

Well, the dot ball streak has gone for too long here, and whenever a spell of dryness goes on for this long, sooner or later something has to give. Rishabh Pant already tried to take his chance a couple of times here, but it did not pay off, and it will break either in a risky boundary or a wicket for England. Stokes definitely senses the moment and starts to make subtle changes to the field set here. These are not the changes that will stand right on the face of the batter, but kind of changes subtle lapse of concentration will a yield a wicket. India has gotten itself into a rut here.

It has been a steady start for India will be the right word to be used. Chris Woakes and Archer, although they have not picked wickets they have ensured there are no easy deliveries bowled, which can be punished for boundaries. While Rahul and Pant are taking their time, which is a good thing in the morning session today, once both Woakes and Archer are done with their opening spell, they have to look to put some pressure back on the bowlers. Also it is nice to be cautious but it is important to rotate strike and not let one bowler have a spell of 2-3 overs to single batter which does help in setting them up.

Both Woakes and Archer have started the day for England, the ball is more than 40 overs old, and the pitch is doing nothing at the moment. The ball is going in straight lines, while there were a couple of deliveries from Archer which bowled indifferently but it might be a start of pattern more than something Indians need to be worried about at this point in the game. While Archer has pace to worry the batters, Woakes has to rely on his line and length to close and end up. Throughout the series so far, It is Woakes who had to create those breakthroughs with the new ball and keep things, but he failed to deliver his role with conviction.

We are done with the opening over of the day, and Jofra Archer took the ball and the first one he sprayed down the leg-side, and Rishabh Pant clipped it for a boundary, and then later in the over, Pant charged one down the track and whacked one through off-side for another boundary. However, he is struggling with his wrist here. There seems to be an injury there which he is suffering with and facing Archer's pace is no mean feat. The sun is shining today and the conditions do look excellent for batting. India has to make the most of conditions today and get a lead of substance.

Day 3 is the moving day in the Test match,, and this game is right in the balance as of now. The morning session can go either of two ways: England bowlers might exploit conditions and pick a few wickets, or India adds another 70-80 without much damage done and come in the noon session to explode and take the game away.

“At one stage, towards the end of England’s innings, Gill lay down for treatment on his back, and the umpires condoned a lengthy stoppage, instead of instructing him to leave the field, to allow play to resume,” Atherton wrote in the The Times. 

“From stoppages for minor injuries, to delays for attempted ball changes, to fussiness over the state of the popping crease — once the groundstaff were called on to flatten where the batsmen were standing — the umpires have lost control of this issue,” wrote Atherton.

“I think he would have probably ended up on it a bit earlier if they had not changed the ball. The ball was swinging around, nipping and it went out of shape and they changed it. And you could tell immediately that Shubman Gill was frustrated with what happened. They given them a softer ball that what they were looking to change and it didn’t do as much from that moment. Former England captain Nasser Hussain slammed Shubman Gill and his team’s bizarre ball change request early on in the second day of play in the Lord’s Test on Friday, despite Jasprit Bumrah and the other pacers making the second ball talk move to their tunes.

“The ball was doing everything this morning. The ball they had, for 63 deliveries, was zipping round corners. Bumrah was going through a magic spell. Siraj at the other hand was having catches dropped. The ball was carrying through to the wicketkeeper. It was doing everything. It was doing more than at any stage in the Test match.”

“I cannot work out why you’d want to change a ball that was doing this much, sixty-three deliveries of the ball zipping round,” the former England skipper continued. “Not only did they want it changed, but the captain got really animated when they didn’t change it. I thought it was one of the most bizarre decisions.

Not playing Test cricket for the last four-and-a-half years, it took Jofra Archer just two deliveries to come up with an unplayable ball. That smooth as Rolls Royce run-up hadn’t changed, the easy approach to the crease was in place and he could also perfectly pitch a 90 mph out-swinger on the legs of a left-hander and square him up.

Yashasvi Jaiswal could only do what even the best of batsmen manage on such balls—edge it into the hands of slips. Lord’s erupted, Jofra was back. The England team was delighted. They had got back their old trusted weapon and it was firing alright. India, after conceding a lot more runs than they should have, had a bad start to their first innings on a difficult pitch.
