IPL 2025, MI vs DC highlights: Mumbai Indians beat Delhi Capitals by 59 runs and take fourth playoff spot

Jasprit Bumrah has picked up Madhav Tiwari. First it was the short ball from the ace seamer, and then it was a fuller one and a slower one, which Tiwari got beaten, and the ball hit the stumps. What a poor performance this has turned out to be from the Capitals with the bat. This was a chaseable total, but they just kept losing wickets and Mitchel Santner has been superb through the middle overs. While Surya might be judged as Man Of The match but Santner did bowl quite superbly through the middle overs.

This is superb bowling from Mitchell Santner. First, it was Sameer Rizvi who tried to sweep and missed and got bowled, and then it was Ashutosh Sharma who got beaten in flight and was stumped. He is giving a master class on how to bowl on these surfaces. He was a white-ball specialist for a long time in his career, but when he bowled his spell in Pune last year against India, picking 14 wickets, he looked something different. Since then, he has gone to the next level and is operating at the peak of his powers.

Delhi Capitals did start the tournament well, however, they just kept fumbling as the tournament went on. KL Rahul and Axar Patel have been two players who have been saving them all this while, and with Axar missing with an injury, and KL Rahul too failing, the demons are all coming in front fore. As per the Mumbai Indians they have only got better, and their bowling too. Mitchell Santner, who missed a few games, is now back, and he bowled superbly today.

Bumrah is bowling superbly here. In the first over, he did miss his mark a bit, but this over, he bowled well. He mixed his variations nicely and used his lengths properly. 10 overs into the innings, Capitals are 66/5 and are struggling big time. Tristian Stubbs, who was the last top-class batter to fall in that over from Bumrah, as he missed a straight one and was trapped in front of the wicket. Stubbs did review the decision however, it was sent upstairs, and there were three reds.

Mitchell Santer has picked up another wicket here. It is Vipraj Nigam held the ball on the surface, and Nigam tried to push back, got the edge, and went back straight to Santner. Delhi has now lost its fourth wicket. Tristian Stubbs has walked into the middle. The ball is turning and gripping, and to add more misery to Delhi, Karn Sharma, who is in form, has come in as an impact sub. Delhi has assessed what they are going to do here, as it is drifting away from their grasp quite quickly. 

Rohit Sharma has dropped a catch in the final over of the powerplay of Rizvi. It was an easy but he spilled, and the bowler was Mitchell Santner. We have not seen Jasprit Bumrah being used with the new ball, but here he is right into the attack after the powerplay. They have done good work in the powerplay here, the Mumbai Indians, but they need to carry on. A few boundaries have been coming quite easily, and the momentum too just seems to be drifting. Capitals still have Tristian Stubbs in the dugout, who is quite a good batters.

Will Jacks has picked up Abhishek Porel. It is getting bad to worse for the Capitals here in the middle. It is a do-or-die game for them,, and if they do manage to lose this contest, they will be out of it. Vipraj Nigam has come to bat, and what a field Mumbai Indians have in the middle. They have two close-in fielders however, Jacks bowled a no-ball and it is a free hit. Mumbai Indians are all over the Delhi Capitals. Capitals might just as well consider counterattacking for a bit and upset the rhythm. They had Axar Patel coming in this position, but today he is unavailable.

KL Rahul too is gone now, and it is Trent Boult. The batter tried to play one through covers and got the edge to the keeper. It was a good low catch from Rickelton. Sameer Rizvi has walked into the middle, and Abhishek Porel is at the other end. These two inexperienced batters need to build a partnership here. It did look like just a par score at the halfway mark, but now with those two early wickets, it does feel like 200. Deepak Chahar is back into the attack. They have bowled quite superbly did the Mumbai Indians in the first few overs here.

Trent Boult has taken the new ball for the Mumbai Indians, and he did bowl well; however, there was no swing and seam moment on offer, and both Rahul and Faf looked quite comfortable in facing it. Both the Capitals need to make the most of this powerplay, as we saw things got harder as the ball got softer. Once again, we remind you that for Capitals, it is do or die. If they lose today now they will be getting out of the tournament. As we update, Deepak Chahar has picked up Faf du Plessis. It was fuller one which he tried to over long-on but got caught.

This is one innings which I was hoping for a very long time. A difficult situation I go into bat and I try to bat till the end and get a score which is maybe a little above par. (Was batting difficult?) It was a slow wicket with the weather around but we had to dig deep, we talked about that during our practice sessions. We knew that the wicket's going to be like this, so we planned accordingly and that's the same way we batted. (On playing the waiting game till the last 2 overs) Waiting gives you a lot of truths in life, it felt I was good inside. I haven't checked the dew till now, but we thought it's a 160-165 wicket, we've got 15 runs extra, let's see, good game on the hands.

That is a cracking innings from Suryakumar Yadav. He took the game away from Delhi Capitals in the last 15 balls or so. It is not a huge total, but it is a par total on the board, and something if they bowl well, they can defend. As per the Capitals, they have tried their best in the final overs to put a stop to the flow of runs, but it could not happen. Mukesh Kumar, who did seem a little unfit in the final overs, did slip out a few loose ones. It is going to be an interesting chase coming up, so do stay with us for all the updates.

Suryakumar Yadav has reached his half-century here. The momentum has started to change here. This is good hitting from Naman Dhir and Suryakumar Yadav, also Mukesh is taking a bit of treatment here, it seems like he is struggling with his cramps.

180 did look like a possibility at one point, however, the Mumbai Indians have lost their way here. Delhi did bowl quite superbly, though the final stage again. Mumbai Indians will be looking at how to bowl on this surface and make notes. On paper, Mumbai does have a better attack than Delhi; however, it does come down to the execution of the slower balls. Also, it will be quite interesting to see if the dew will set in or not. If the dew does come in the batting does get much easier. Also, Delhi Capitals must attack the new ball, as the ball gets older, it gets tougher and tougher to bat on.

Tilak Varma did fall in the end. It was the slower one from Mukesh that Tilak tried to hit through long-off and get caught It was a run ball innings from Tilak, just at the time when he had to explode, he lost his wicket. As we update Hardik Pandya falls once again, it was a slower one from Chammera, which he tried to hit the ball through the off-side and got the edge, and the ball carried to fine-leg. After a good start Mumbai Indians are losing their way here in the final few overs.

A 50-run partnership comes up between Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav. It has been quite a different kind of partnership between these two. Especially when these two are batting, one would expect to get to the mark a lot quicker. However, they had to absorb pressure in the middle overs and get through the tough period. The good thing for Mumbai is they are still in the middle, and one of these two have to go on and make a big score and stay till the end. As per Delhi Capitals, it will be a good time for them to pick one before we get into the death overs.

The big overs need to come now for the Mumbai Indians. How many times have we seen this wicket behave this way this season? It got better and better as the evening went on. In the last game here against Titans, it was the rain that altered the conditions, but eventually Titans had enough power, and the conditions did get better. While it is good that they are looking to set a platform, they do need to get a minimum of 180-190, which will give them a fighting chance later in the evening. Compared to the spinners of Capitals Mumbai's spinners are quite different especially Karn Sharma who looks to bowl quicker and flatter.

Captaincy from Faf has been quite superb so far. He has made the change on the go and used the bowlers accordingly. He did not shy away from throwing the ball in the powerplay to Vipraj Nigam and also did not hesitate to take Chameera out of the attack just for one over. He has mixed and matched things nicely. Though he had the option of Madhav Tiwari, he did not go to him for the sake of it, as the spinners in the middle overs have done their job. He is choking this partnership nicely through the middle overs. Mumbai needs an over here which breaks the shackles.

Spinners are bowling quite superbly in the middle overs here for the Capitals. Mumbai Indians, after those first two overs, have lost complete momentum in the innings. While they must preserve wickets for the final overs explosion at the moment, it does feel like they are trying to be too cautious. Tilak Varma has come into the middle,, and he is getting adjusted to the pace of the wicket. Kuldeep Yadav, who has come into the attack after the powerplay, is controlling things nicely. Well, they don't have Axar today but he too would have been quite handy on this one.

Mukesh Kumar picked up the wicket of Will Jacks. It was a fuller one which Jacks tried to hit over the top however, the ball took the toe end and flew high in the air, and it was a lovely catch by the mid-off fielder who had to run back for it and take it. And as we update,, Suryakumar Yadav has been dropped at fine-leg by Mukesh Kumar. It was a very difficult catch, but it just seems like Mukesh was in two minds on how to approach. However, the ball after Rickelton slog swept one straight to the square-leg fielder, and it was an excellent catch. Mumbai has lost three wickets now.

This is a good pullback from the Capitals in the last 10 minutes or so. Both Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton were going all guns blazing; however, since Mustafizur has come in and started to slip in a few slower ones, the batting seems to have become quite difficult. The pitch is stopping a bit and gripping. We have also seen Vipraj Nigam come into attack to bowl an over, and he too did get a bit to turn. We have seen this feature in Wankhede this season, where the pitch has been a bit on the slower side in the first innings, and it gets better as the second innings go in.

Rohit Sharma threw his bat at a wide one from Mustafizur Rahman, and the ball took the edge, and the keeper took a lovely diving catch. It is once again the left-arm seamer who gets the better of Rohit Sharma. This is good from Faf too, he realised the batters are lining up the bowlers and he has used three seamers in the first three overs. The wicket, on the other hand, did seem a bit tacky, but the ball is coming beautifully onto the bat if Mumbai does manage to put on a good platform. here we might see them put on a big score. 

Mukesh Kumar has taken the new ball for Delhi Capitals. He has not played the last few games did Mukesh, and here he is taking the new ball in a high-pressure game. With Mitchell Starc missing out, this is the right move to use Mukesh with the new ball because he has the ability to extract any sort of seam movement in the surface, but the thing is, he has not played in a while. It will be very interesting to see how Faf juggles his bowler especially in the absence of Axar Patel who is not just one players but three in one and has been their consistent performer with bat and ball.

It's been really up and now we're on a bit of a downward trajectory but it's pretty simple. We got to go out, it's a must-win game today, it has been for a while but it's going to be a really cool game. Both teams have to win so it's quite exciting. (On the loss against GT) It was a difficult one, those two (Sai Sudharsan and Shubman Gill) guys are pretty good at batting and they made it look really easy. It's not too disconcerting there, they're world-class players, this tournament is full of them. We know today, come out, start well and we have a game to win. It's really nice batting at the back end of the innings, the game tells you what you need to do, you sort of set it up and I have enjoyed it. I don't mind (being a finisher), every sort of team I've played it's different role. I enjoy this role, it's a difficult role, you get in in really different situations, it's about just trying to maximise every ball.

"We love the Wankhede. What we love about today also is that the sun is out because I planned to kinda go on "Rain, rain go away, come back another day," because everybody's been talking about the fact there would be rain. It's a good thing there isn't. Let's have a look at the dimensions for today, we are just about in the middle. Square - 62m and 63m, so not much difference there and 72m straight. What about the 22 yards? Thank you sun, it's lovely and as we look, it's really baked this wicket out as well. You could be actually thinking there's not a lot of grass on this, there's some patches here but it's actually the grass is very well rolled into it. A slightly different colour (on a fuller length) versus in here (good length), this to me looks like the groundsman has topped it up with a little bit of extra moisture to hold it all together. I suspect that the off-pace deliveries especially from the seamers are going to be a little tricky. If you lose the toss, you'll probably be having to put the bat in the hand and you got to get 200, simple as that. But you want to chase because there's been four out of the six games that have been won chasing. Expect a bit of dew this evening because it's very humid."

It's been under covers for a couple of days. We would have liked to bowl as well, but it's okay. Every game is important from now onwards, we want to play our best cricket. The boys are very excited. (On Axar) Really sick in the last two days. We'll miss him today. Playing a good team today, we are up for it. We haven't been at our best in the last 5-6 games. Everyday there's a new opportunity. Looks a bit dry, we're chasing. Axar is not there, Axar is two players and it's difficult to replace him. We'll see how it goes.

As stated earlier, all the dramatic buildup could end up being for nothing with Mumbai being lashed by rains in the days leading up to the match. Delhi Capitals co-owner Parth Jindal reportedly has requested the organisers to move his franchise’s all-important match against Mumbai Indians in the wake of a possible washout due to inclement weather predictions in the city. According to a report by ESPNcricinfo, Jindal’s request came after the May 23 fixture between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and SunRisers Hyderabad in Bengaluru was shifted to Lucknow after RCB’s last match at the Chinnaswamy Stadium was washed out. There are rain predictions for the MI vs DC game in Mumbai on Wednesday as well.

Asking for a change in venue, Jindal wrote an email to IPL saying, “The forecast in Mumbai is for heavy rains and there is a strong likelihood that the game will be washed out. Just as the game between RCB vs SRH has been moved out of Bengaluru in the quest for consistency and in the interest of the league it is my request that tomorrow’s game also be moved to a different location as we have known for the better part of 6 days that the forecast for 21st in Mumbai is for heavy showers,” said Jindal as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
