Skincare often ends up on the back burner due to lack of time. At such times, actor Rashmika Mandanna swears by sheet masks. The Animal actor recently took to her Instagram Stories to share how the paucity of time led her to apply a sheet mask. “What to do now: Overworked- no sleep-travel-no rest for your skin-no time to go to dermatologist-so then what do you do-the only solution-sheet masks,” shared Mandanna.

How do sheet masks help your skin?

A sheet mask is a skincare product made of a thin fabric soaked in a concentrated serum. “It’s designed to deliver potent ingredients to the skin. It’s convenient for quick skincare as it requires minimal preparation and application time,” said Dr Rinky Kapoor, consultant dermatologist, cosmetic dermatologist, and dermato-surgeon, The Esthetic Clinics.

Sheet masks became popular with the boom of K beauty regime, that is from South Korea, noted Dr Priti Mahire, cosmetologist and trichologist, Skinshine Skin Clinic, Mumbai. “Sheet masks are a very easy and effective way to give your skin an immediate boost of vitamins and moisturise your skin. It also is a quick and effective way to pamper your skin and give instant skin care benefits,” shared Dr Mahire.

*It promotes hydration because most sheet masks are packed with hydrating agents which prevent water loss through the skin and boost skin hydration, said Dr Mahire.

*It gives an instant brightening effect to the skin. Since sheet masks are packed with high amounts of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, they enhance a healthy glow to the skin for those who suffer from dull and uneven skin tone

*It also nourishes the skin because these masks are packed with ingredients like vitamin C, vitamin E, hyaluronic acid, peptides, niacinamide etc. These keep your skin hydrated, moisturised and gives your skin, a healthy complexion

*It soothes and calms irritated and sensitive skin

*It maintains the skin’s natural barrier function.

How to use it?

Firstly, cleanse your face. Pat it dry. Apply the sheet mask carefully by unfolding the cutouts. Keep it for 15 to 20 minutes and then remove the sheet mask. “Gently massage excess serum into your face and neck. For masks containing active ingredients like glycolic acid or retinol use it only once a week,” said Dr Mahire.

How many times to use it?

Sheet masks are typically intended for one-time use for hygiene and efficacy reasons. “Using them regularly, like 1-3 times a week, can help maintain skin hydration and address specific concerns,” said Dr Kapoor.

Dry skin: Look for sheet masks with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or aloe vera. These ingredients help replenish moisture and nourish dry skin, leaving it feeling more supple and revitalised.

Oily or acne-prone skin: Opt for sheet masks containing ingredients such as salicylic acid, tea tree oil, or niacinamide. These components can help control excess oil, minimise pores, and target acne or blemishes.

Sensitive skin: Choose sheet masks with gentle and soothing ingredients like chamomile, calendula, or aloe vera. Avoid masks with harsh chemicals or fragrances that may trigger irritation.

Mature skin: Look for sheet masks with anti-aging ingredients such as collagen, peptides, or antioxidants like vitamin C. These can help improve elasticity, reduce fine lines, and promote a more youthful complexion.
