Hormones play a critical role in regulating everyday functions. In fact, one of the primary hormones that the ovary produces is the sex hormone called progesterone, along with estrogen. According to nutritionist Lovneet Batra, women with low progesterone levels experience irregular periods, low libido, anxiety, waking up at night, bone loss, and fibrocystic breasts (painful, lumpy breasts). As such, it is extremely important to address low levels, and a natural way to do it is by consuming foods that help increase progesterone levels, she added.

Agreed Garima Goyal, a registered dietitian, and said, “Generally, low levels of progesterone is associated with infertility, miscarriage, reduced sex drive, and for some, weight gain.”

Emphasising that while foods, as such, do not contain progesterone in them, Goyal said some foods can support the production of progesterone. “However, low levels of progesterone should be addressed medically along with proper lifestyle modifications,” she advised.

She further add that though there are no individual studies, certain anecdotal evidences have shown positive effects of some foods that “stimulate progesterone production”.

So, what are some of the good sources?

*Banana is a good source of magnesium, which helps in the production of the progesterone hormone. Magnesium is also known to regulate the pituitary gland which, in turn, regulates the production of progesterone.

*Walnuts contain plant sterols that can stimulate the production of progesterone in women. Walnuts are also rich in vitamin B6, which also helps to raise progesterone production.

*Okra is a rich source of magnesium and zinc, which are essential nutrients for balancing progesterone hormones.

*Pumpkin seeds are high in zinc, which helps support progesterone production.

*Almonds are a rich source of magnesium and vitamin E, which aid the production of the progesterone hormone.

Goyal concurred and added that consuming foods like banana, walnut, and almonds do support the body’s production of sex hormones which can be beneficial, “but it is also important to manage stress and be  physically activite which can ‘also influence sex hormones’,” she told indianexpress.com.
