Our fast-paced lives often leave us searching for quick fixes. Even when it comes to skincare, most of us are seeking easy solutions. However, actor Nargis Fakhri doesn’t vouch for such choices. Elaborating on her skincare tips to Soha Ali Khan, the Rockstar actor said, “Everybody wants a quick fix, but there is no quick fix.”
Fakhri’s fix for her skin is not quick, but “a combination of things,” as she discussed in the interview with Mashable India. “There’s always a combination of things. And the combination for me seems to be great sleep; I sleep for about 8 hours a night. Second is my hydration, and then my food choices. I want foods that are nutritious and have vitamins and minerals in them.”
Agreeing that a balanced combination of sleep, hydration, and nutrition plays a powerful role in improving skin health over time, nutritionist Dr Anjana Kalia said, “These three factors work together to maintain skin elasticity, promote cell repair, and enhance the natural glow.”
When you sleep well, your body produces collagen, which helps keep the skin firm, according to the doctor. Proper hydration helps flush out toxins and maintain moisture, preventing dullness and dryness. Nutrition provides essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that protect the skin from damage.
“A routine that combines 7–8 hours of sleep, adequate water intake, and a nutrient-rich diet can significantly improve skin texture, tone, and overall health.”
According to Dr Kalia, sleep is crucial for skin repair and regeneration. During deep sleep, blood flow to the skin increases, and the body produces collagen and repairs damage caused by UV exposure and pollution.
She added, “Poor sleep, on the other hand, leads to dull, tired-looking skin, dark circles, and fine lines. Lack of rest also increases cortisol levels (stress hormone), which can trigger inflammation and worsen acne or eczema. Consistent good sleep not only enhances skin glow but also helps maintain an even skin tone and firmness.”
The second combination of things for a glowing skin, as pointed out by Nargis Fakhri, is hydration. “Hydration has a direct impact on skin health. Well-hydrated skin appears plump, soft, and radiant, whereas dehydration can make it look flaky, tight, or dull. Water helps flush toxins, supports nutrient absorption, and maintains the skin’s natural moisture barrier,” said Dr Kalia.
An average adult should aim for approximately 8–10 glasses (2–2.5 litres) of water daily, although needs may vary depending on the climate and level of physical activity. Including water-rich foods like cucumbers, oranges, and watermelon also helps maintain hydration.
Healthy food choices are key to preventing many skin problems. As Fakhri stressed in the interview, foods rich in nutrients are the key to healthy skin.
Agreeing that healthy food choices help maintain a healthy skin, Dr Kalia added, “Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids (like fish, walnuts, and flaxseeds) reduce inflammation and help control acne. Vitamin E, C, and A—found in fruits, vegetables, and nuts—protect against dryness and premature ageing.”
Avoiding excessive sugar and processed foods prevents collagen breakdown and acne flare-ups. A diet rich in whole grains, lean proteins, healthy fats, and colourful fruits and vegetables ensures long-term skin vitality and a radiant glow, concluded Dr Kalia.
