Holidays serve as the perfect break from the hustle-bustle of everyday life. However, before jetting off, it’s crucial to pay special attention to your health. That is because we end up indulging in delicious treats and hearty meals on our travels, which can take a toll on the digestive system. As such, Neha Sahaya, a nutrition and wellness consultant, took to Instagram to suggest that carrying “gut tablets or digestive health supplements” can be beneficial during holidays.

The reasons she listed are as follows:

Dietary changes: Holidays often involve indulging in rich and unfamiliar foods which, according to Sahaya, can put a strain on the digestive system. “Gut tablets can help support the digestive process by providing enzymes and probiotics that aid in breaking down and absorbing nutrients.”

Travel-related issues: During travel, you may experience changes in your diet, time zone, and water source, which can disrupt your digestive system, the nutritionist said, adding that “gut tablets can help alleviate symptoms like bloating, gas, and constipation, promoting a more comfortable trip”.

Immune support: A significant portion of our immune system resides in our gut. “By maintaining a healthy gut, you can enhance your immune function and reduce the risk of falling ill on your holiday. Gut tablets often contain probiotics, which introduce beneficial bacteria to the gut and help maintain a balanced microbial environment,” the expert said.

Stress management: Holidays can be stressful due to various factors such as travel arrangements, family gatherings, or simply being in a different environment. And, according to Sahaya, “Stress can negatively impact digestion and contribute to symptoms like indigestion and stomach discomfort. Gut tablets can support a healthy gut-brain connection, helping to manage stress and its impact on digestion.”

Dr Pratik Tibdewal, Consultant Gastroenterologist, Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road while agreeing with the above mentioned points, strictly suggested taking these supplements in the dosage recommended by the doctor only. “Doing so will help you restore good gut bacteria. You will be able to get digestive support when you are away from home and also boost the immune system. But, you will also have to take charge of your overall health while travelling. Try to choose foods wisely. Do not eat anything that is fully raw and even avoid spicy foods that can interfere with your digestive process. Apart from the supplements, consume fibre-rich food and stay hydrated from time to time,” he added.

Dr Dilip Gude, Senior Consultant Physician, Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad too emphasised that the gut needs good bacteria as much as it needs the elimination of bad bacteria as the gut microbiota plays an important role in maintaining overall immunity.

“When travelling, there is a high risk of eating/drinking contaminated food/water. Taking pre and pro-biotics along usually helps as replenishing bad with good bacteria/spores helps improve the gut microbiota balance and prevent innocuous diarrhoea. If loose stools are refractory despite pre/probiotics then antibiotics may be required,” he said.
