Have you made a habit of popping painkillers? Today it was your back that was hurting, yesterday it was your legs, the day before your head. You don’t have to tough it out either but that does not mean you take painkillers every day.

According to Dr Sanjay Gupta, consultant, Department of Internal Medicine, Manipal Hospitals, Dwarka, there are two types of painkillers, paracetamol-based ones and NSAIDs or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like diclofenac, sodium, ibuprofen, profen, aceclofenac, among others.

These painkillers may be easily available but it is important to exercise caution when consuming them.

Consuming more than 1 gram (gm) of paracetamol per day for 3-4 months might cause acute liver and kidney damage, according to Dr Gupta.

“Although 1 gm of paracetamol doesn’t cause as much harm as NSAIDs do, you still should not eat it for a long-duration,” he explains.

As for NSAIDs, he says they can cause a host of issues like liver injury, acute gastritis, gastric ulcers, permanent kidney damage. They can also rupture the lower end of your oesophagus.

“Consuming NSAIDs for more than two weeks can lead to permanent kidney damage,” he explains.

Liver toxicity

Dr Gupta explains that you will experience acute pain and tenderness below your right ribcage, where your liver is.

“The liver enzymes and bilirubin will be raised in the liver function test,” he says.

Because of decreased liver function, it will affect the clotting of blood.

The liver releases blood-clotting factor, due to whose deficiency spontaneous bleeding can occur.

“This may also lead the person to bleed out,” Dr Gupta says.
