One of the best ways to stay fighting fit is to have seasonal vegetables and fruits. As such, it doesn’t come as a surprise that incorporating at least one fruit a day works wonders for your health. Even Anshula Kapoor swears by it. She recently shared a glimpse of having some oranges and reminded us all to also have our pick of the day.
“Have you had a fruit today?” asked Anshula, while adding, “feeling good like I should”.
Why have at least one fruit a day?
Samanta Bahl, co-founder, Nirvi For Women, Mumbai listed some of the reasons concurring that a fruit a day ensures that you can meet all your nutritional requirements including:
Powerhouse of vitamins and antioxidants: Fruit is a great way to get your daily dose of vitamin A, vitamin C, potassium, and vitamin K (depending on which fruit you choose to have). Fruits are also rich in antioxidants that fight free radical damage, slow down ageing, and boost immunity.
Excellent source of fibre – both soluble and insoluble: Fibre is a very important yet neglected nutrient. Fruits are rich in fibre that help with your bowel movements and give you a feeling of fullness. The presence of fibre in fruit also helps slows down the absorption of fructose (sugar) in the body thus preventing a spike in blood sugar levels, said Bahl.
Great way to sneak in some hydration: Certain fruits (watermelon, cantaloupe, oranges) contain a lot of water. “It will help you quench your thirst in the hot summer months and also ensure adequate hydration,” said Bahl.
Instant source of energy: Since fruits are a source of simple sugar, a serving of fruit may give you anywhere between 10-15g of sugar giving you very quick energy when you need it. “This is why fruits make for a great pre-workout snack,” said Bahl.
Easy snack: A lot of us struggle with snacking often reaching out for unhealthy and deep fried snacks. “Fruits can be a very easy replacement for this. For people who are trying to shed some weight, fruit makes for a great mid-meal snack,” said Bahl.
