Lately, matcha has gained a lot of popularity owing to its health benefits with many people even swapping their coffee with this nutritious tea. Matcha is a specially-grown tea traditionally, consumed in East Asia countries. Matchas are shade-grown 20–30 days before harvest to avoid direct sunlight.
From helping you lose weight to making your skin glow, matcha comes with an array of benefits. Kylie Ivanir, a gut health dietitian, took to Instagram to list some of the benefits of matcha. Take a look.
Antioxidant
Matcha is an antioxidant with the highest anti-inflammatory potential which means it contains high amounts of healthy gut polyphenols that feed your good gut bacteria, reduce inflammation, and remove the bad stuff from your body.
As per a report published in the National Library of Medicine, the number of certain catechins in matcha is up to 137 times greater than in other types of green tea.
Helps with anxiety and jitters
Matcha contains theanine, an anti-jitter, anxiety quelling antioxidant leads to fewer spike and crash cycles, more productivity, and won’t have you reaching for that chocolate bar or second cup of tea. “It contains L theanine, an antioxidant, which promotes relaxation and mood,” said Deeksha Arora, dietitian, Apollo Spectra Delhi Karol Bagh.
Controls blood sugar
Matcha supports glucose (sugar) metabolism. This leads to fewer spike-crash-cycle and gives you consistent energy throughout the day. “It controls diabetes due to the presence of polysaccharides which absorb glucose,” added Arora.
Helps with fat loss
Matcha is fat oxidising. It contains a catechin called EGCG which breaks down fatty acids, reduces lipogenesis (the synthesis of fatty acids from non-fat precursors), and inhibits dietary fat absorption. This can help with fat loss or help you maintain a healthy weight.
Glowing skin
If you want glowing skin, sipping matcha may benefit you. The EGCG in match binds androgen (testosterone) receptors which curb sebum or oil production. Also, matcha’s anti-inflammatory effect means less redness and a brighter complexion.
