Soha Ali Khan recently gave us a glimpse into her morning routine, sharing that she has been consuming a particular juice every day for the past three months. “Self-love is hugely important! I have been drinking white pumpkin juice (ash gourd) every morning on an empty stomach for the past three months. It’s detoxifying, cooling, and great for my gut,” said Khan, 46.
Furthermore, sharing some advice for those wanting to try out this juice, Soha added: “Important to note – always taste a small piece of ash gourd before juicing, and if it tastes bitter, spit it out and discard the entire gourd. Use only fresh, ripe, and non-bitter ash gourd from trusted sources.”
Taking a cue from her revelation, let’s examine the effectiveness of consuming this juice.
Dt. Gulnaaz Shaikh, Chief Dietitian at KIMS Hospitals, Thane, concurred that ash gourd, also known as white pumpkin or petha, possesses natural cooling and detoxifying properties. “When consumed first thing in the morning, it helps cleanse the digestive system, supports liver function, and can ease acidity and bloating. Its high water content also makes it great for hydration and gut health,” said Shaikh.
How do you check if the ash gourd is sweet or safe to consume?
Agreeing with Khan’s tips, Shaikh advised always tasting a small raw piece before juicing. “The flesh should taste neutral to mildly sweet; it should never be bitter. Bitterness can indicate toxicity, so throw away the entire gourd if it tastes off. Choose gourds that are fresh, firm, and free from any sour smell or soft spots,” said Shaikh.
Is ash gourd juice recommended for everyone?
It is generally suitable for most people, especially those dealing with acidity, body heat, or digestive issues, Shaikh informed. However, individuals prone to sinusitis, asthma, or cold-related conditions should consume it carefully, as its cooling effect might not be right for them. People with diabetes can also include it in moderation since it has a low glycemic index, said Shaikh.
Kanikka Malhotra, a consultant dietician and certified diabetes educator, said that if you often struggle with colds, sinus problems, or find that “cooling” foods make you feel worse, ash gourd juice may not be your best morning drink, as it can intensify those issues. “Pair it with a pinch of pepper or a bit of honey if you’re sensitive. As always, if you have underlying medical issues, kidney concerns, or are on medication, check with your doctor before making it a regular habit,” said Malhotra.
Drink it plain, without salt, sugar, or lemon, said Shaikh. “The ideal amount is about 100-150 ml on an empty stomach. Avoid eating anything for at least 30-45 minutes afterward. Most importantly, the juice should always be consumed fresh and never stored,” Shaikh added.
When used correctly, ash gourd juice can be a gentle, natural way to support digestion, hydration, and internal balance. “Moderation and balance—just like with any food—are key,” said Malhotra.
