Filmmaker and YouTuber Farah Khan recently paid a visit to Rakesh Roshan and Pinkie Roshan’s palatial Lonavala ‘hotel’ home, which left her mighty impressed — especially the mighty bathrooms and bedroom. As Pinkie whipped up their family favourite arbi fry, the 70-year-old mentioned that the couple love a particular type of coffee, “He loves coffee. Black coffee. Both of us.”
Taking a cue from her candid confession, let’s understand if black coffee is recommended for those over 70.
Is black coffee safe for everyone above 70?
There are no health risks in drinking black coffee; people have enjoyed black coffee for generations, even into their 70s and beyond, said Dt Amreen Sheikh, chief dietitian, KIMS Hospitals, Thane.
According to Sheikh, it can induce energy, provide alertness, and even help digestion. “But you can imagine – the effects of caffeine as you age may not be the same in everyone’s body. As we age, some may enjoy a cup or two without any disturbances, whereas others may have trouble sleeping, feel acidity/hotness, or even a racing heart. So, while it can be safe, it really depends on how each person feels after drinking it,” said Sheikh.
What should one keep in mind before drinking black coffee at this age?
The most important thing is moderation. Limiting it to one or two small cups a day is usually better than having multiple servings. According to Sheikh, it is also wise to avoid coffee late in the evening, since sleep problems are already common in older age. “People with acidity, gastritis, or sensitive stomachs need to be extra careful because black coffee is acidic. Staying hydrated is another point coffee can make some people urinate more often, so balancing it with enough water is helpful,” said Sheikh.
Are there any benefits of black coffee for the elderly?
Yes, in moderation, it can enhance alertness, a positive mood and assist digestion. “Some people have even suggested a slight improvement in concentration or a slight metabolic boost,” said Sheikh.
Should everyone above 70 drink it?
Not necessarily, as coffee is a choice, not a requirement. “For some, alternatives like herbal teas, light green tea, or simply warm water may feel better. If black coffee causes discomfort or restlessness, it is probably best to reduce the amount or utilise a less aggressive form of coffee consumption,” said Sheikh.
Drinking black coffee after 70 is fine, just be conscientious of your body and keep your amount balanced. Everyone is different; there is no “one size fits all,” and it is a matter of finding what works for your individual case of comfort and enjoyment.
