Neil Nitin Mukesh recently opened up about his food preferences. The Hisaab Barabar actor revealed that he ensures he eats on time due to a digestive issue. “I eat every two hours. I have a condition. I have had acid reflux issues for many years. I have GERD, because of which I have to eat every two hours,” the 43-year-old said
He also shared that he loves Gujarati Chhundo so much that an aunt makes about 8-10 kilos for him, which he loves to have with everything, including pizza. “I love it,” Neil told Curly Tales.
Acid reflux, also called hyperacidity or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), is a common issue usually caused by certain lifestyle habits and the consumption of fried, fatty, and spicy foods. “It happens due to the production of extra acid that damages the lining of the stomach,” said Dr Sudhir Jadhav, consultant, general surgery, Manipal Hospital, Kharadi- Pune.
Many may experience constant burps along with acid coming into the throat and chest pain.
“One can easily manage their acid reflux issues by frequently eating throughout the day to prevent the stomach from becoming too empty or too full,” said Dr. Meghraj Ingle, director, and senior consultant, gastroenterology, Gleneagles Hospitals in Mumbai.
If your stomach is too full or empty, it can trigger the buildup of acid, resulting in acid reflux, noted Dr Ingle.
“Stomach acid can accumulate in the food pipe when you don’t eat anything for an extended period. This can cause heartburn and also extreme discomfort. On the other hand, eating larger meals can also cause the same. Heavy meals can put pressure on the stomach while pushing the acid upward. This is why individuals are advised to eat small portions frequently to keep their acid levels stable,” said Dr Ingle.
This can help make the digestion process easier. It can also help prevent bloating and reduce irritation in the stomach lining.
Dr Ingle said, “Eat foods that are light and non-spicy”. This can help avoid symptoms related to acid reflux.
Focus more on eating foods that are gentle on your stomach and encourage digestion. Ensure that you eat slowly and chew your food well. This can help reduce the stress on your digestive system. Adopting this eating pattern can help avoid later night munching while significantly controlling your acid reflux issue.
If your acid reflux is still persistent even after continuous efforts, then immediately consult a doctor. Your doctor may evaluate your condition and recommend the treatment option accordingly.
