Esha Deol, 43, recently revealed a tiny detail about her 76-year-old mother and actor Hema Malini’s diet. “Dekha jaaye toh, meri mummy bhi gluten-free khaate hai toh zyaadatar percentage sab healthy mangaayenge (Even my mother eats gluten-free food, so mostly all of us order healthy food),” she told the Eat Travel Repeat YouTube channel when asked about who orders healthy food in the Deol family.
Taking a cue from her candid confession, let’s understand how having gluten-free food in the 70s helps the body.
Dt Amreen Sheikh, chief dietitian, KIMS Hospitals, Thane, said that even in the 70s, making small dietary changes like cutting out gluten can bring noticeable health benefits.
Why does eating gluten-free matter in your 70s?
As a person grows older, digestion slows down and becomes more sensitive. “Gluten, the protein in wheat, barley, and rye, can be more difficult for some individuals to digest. Reducing or eliminating gluten tends to alleviate bloating, discomfort, and slowness, making older people feel lighter and more energetic,” said Sheikh.
What are the advantages of a gluten-free diet?
Most noticeable for most is better digestion. Some additionally experience less joint stiffness and fewer issues of inflammation, Sheikh added.
“Eating gluten-free foods can help provide more consistent energy levels throughout the day, which is particularly helpful when metabolism slows due to ageing. Individuals with gluten sensitivity tend to experience better long-term issues, such as stomach upset, skin rashes, and mood swings,” Sheikh said.
What should one consider before going gluten-free in their 70s?
Balance is important. Gluten-free must not equate to nutrient-free, Sheikh asserted.
“Most processed gluten-free food is over-processed and deficient in nutrients. Rather, meals are made of whole foods such as fruits, vegetables, rice, lentils, and millets to provide the body with all that it requires in terms of fibre, protein, and vitamins. The elderly also need to be careful with bone health by consuming adequate calcium and vitamin D,” said Sheikh.
Selecting a gluten-free way of life in the 70s can be a straightforward yet effective means of supporting digestion, energy, and overall health. “Eating consciously can enable people to grow older with grace while remaining active and healthy,” said Sheikh.
