Manisha Koirala believes in stretching every day. “Don’t skip the stretch! Stretching after your workout helps reduce soreness, improve flexibility, prevent injuries, and boost recovery,” the Heeramandi actor, a cancer survivor, said.
She added, “Take 5 minutes to stretch — it’s the final step to crushing your fitness goals!”
And experts couldn’t agree more.
Dr Prithviraj Deshmukh, orthopaedic surgeon, orthobiologics expert and interventional pain management specialist, Nexus Day Surgery Centre, agreed that exercising regularly is a great way to stay fit and healthy. “People who exercise inconsistently create an environment conducive to major injury,” said Dr Deshmukh.
According to him, when muscles are not adequately stretched and warmed up before exercise, “the risk for muscle strain or tear increases significantly.” “Furthermore, when core muscles are not conditioned properly, the risk for joint injury or stress fracture also increases,” added Dr Deshmukh.
Debunking the myth that continuous exercise leads to quick results, Dr Deshmukh said that it can be detrimental. “While regular exercise is beneficial for health and can prevent diseases, it’s essential to do it safely and responsibly. This also includes regular stretching pre and post-workouts,” said Dr Deshmukh.
Dr (Maj) Amit Chaudhry, senior consultant, orthopedics surgery, Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram, said stretching exercises can also help alleviate pain and improve mobility.
Therefore, it’s essential to warm up properly to prevent injuries while working out. “Before starting your exercise routine, properly warm up your body. After each workout, give yourself time to cool down,” said Dr Deshmukh.
Regular stretching helps maintain muscle flexibility and reduces the risk of injury. “This is especially important if you work out frequently and your muscles become stiff,” said Dr Deshmukh.
He also agreed that stretching needs to be complemented with sound equipment and maintaining correct posture to avoid injury.
Starting any stretching routine should ideally be done under the supervision of your fitness trainer. “They can guide you in performing the exercises correctly and monitor your progress to prevent any potential strain or further injury,” said Dr Chaudhry.
