Fitness trainer Mahesh Ghanekar recently shared a few glimpses of Kareena Kapoor Khan working out at her home on Instagram. In the video, Kareena can be seen doing a combination of bodyweight and strength training exercises, which shows her flexibility. “Celebrity fitness isn’t luck — it’s work. @kareenakapoorkhan putting in the work — no filters, no shortcuts. Real strength. Real results.”

Commenting, one user wrote, “Wow, she’s looking great. I can tell, probably within the next few months she’ll be super fit”, while another added, “So inspiring”. Yet another commented, “It’s not easy keeping in shape after kids”.

Taking a cue from the video, let’s understand how important it is to stay in shape post-motherhood.

Staying consistent with fitness as a mother of two — while gracefully navigating the changes that come with ageing — is a real-life balancing act, not a glossy celebrity routine, said consultant dietitian Kanikka Malhotra.

For busy moms, fitness can look slightly different. “It’s less about a strict, hour-long session and more about weaving moments of movement into a life that never stops demanding attention,” said Malhotra.

Imagine fitting in quick bursts of strength training between school runs, or turning playful moments with the kids into mini workouts. According to Malhotra, ageing means your body shifts; muscles don’t bounce back as quickly; joints might creak a little more but it also brings wisdom about self-care.

The focus turns from chasing perfection to honouring your body’s needs: building strength to keep up with your little ones, boosting balance to feel steady on your feet, and embracing flexibility to move without pain. “Consistency here means showing up for yourself, even if it’s 15 minutes of yoga in the morning or a few strengthening moves while watching TV. It’s about choosing movement that feels good and knowing that every little bit counts. Nourishing your body with simple, comforting meals (hello, khichdi!) helps keep energy up amidst the chaos,” said Malhotra.

She stressed that being a mother and ageing can sometimes feel like a whirlwind, but with a mindset of kindness, patience, and flexibility, fitness becomes a joyful part of life, not a chore.

“It’s about celebrating every small win, knowing that taking care of yourself is the best gift you can give your family—and ultimately, yourself,” said Malhotra.
