Bitten by the fitness bug? Love to experiment with new workouts? Then ‘travelling rings’ is what you need to try, if you haven’t already. Recently, actor Ashmit Patel was seen working out with this gymnastic equipment in Los Angeles’ Santa Monica, in a video taken by former actor and influencer Shenaz Treasury.
“Do you know what these are? They’re called travelling rings. This is in Santa Monica, Los Angeles. Next to the Santa Monica Pier, there’s an open-air #gym with travelling rings, bars etc for public use. This is the original site of Muscle Beach (not to be confused with the iconic Gold’s gym which is a stone’s throw away in Venice Beach). This is one of the most characteristic spots in LA, one that truly expresses the real Californian lifestyle,” he captioned his Instagram video.
“At this historic workout venue, you will see locals training and working out everyday. Check out their amazing acrobatics on the travelling rings and have a go yourself just like I did. Those guys rock, so don’t feel embarassed if you can’t fly like them. I asked one of them about the rings and he encouraged me to give it a shot with some starter tips,” Patel shared.
He even opened up about not doing a proper warmup, which lead to his shoulders ‘hurting’ post the stunt. In the comments section, he tagged Shenaz and wrote, “Hahaha thanks for the vid. My shoulders were hurting after, remember? I went in the cold without warming up.” As such, he had a word of advice for all those willing to give it a try. “Be sure to warm up those shoulders and let’s gooooo…let’s get #ashfit”.
What are travelling rings, and how do they help?
According to TravelingRings.org, these “are a special type of fitness equipment which normally have 5-10 aluminum rings suspended by chains, each of which is linked to a steel support or beam”. “One can ‘travel’ from one ring to the next by a combination of arm pulls and leg swings,” it reads.
The site further noted that although the travelling rings have existed since at least the 1860s, the Original Muscle Beach in Santa Monica, California popularised them in the 1970s. “The sport has since grown and new swinging techniques have emerged from tireless practice, although there are still no official rules or guidelines. Style is left up to the individual to develop, which makes it a perfect sport for anybody looking to try something new,” it reads.
According to Varun Rattan, co-founder, The Body Science Academy, Noida, travelling rings offer a “full-body workout” by engaging multiple muscle groups that can help you build and enhance strength and endurance in a fun way. “It can target your arms, shoulders, back, chest, core, and legs, depending on the specific movement,” he said.
“Travelling rings can help improve your balance, coordination, flexibility, and range of motion,” added Rattan.
While travelling ring exercises can be a fun and effective way to work out, there are some precautions you must take, urged Rattan.
*It’s important to use high-quality equipment that is designed for the purpose. This includes the rings themselves, as well as any straps, hooks, or other attachments. Make sure everything is securely fastened and in good condition before starting your workout.
*Travelling ring exercises require proper technique and form to avoid injury. It’s important to learn the correct form and start with easier movements before progressing to advanced ones. Common injuries include strains, sprains, and falls. It’s important to listen to your body and avoid pushing yourself too hard, advised Rattan.
*If you’re new to travelling ring exercises, it’s a good idea to have a trained professional supervise your workout.
“Remember to do a full body warm-up for at least 10 minutes before performing these exercises to avoid injuries,” said Rattan.
