The much-awaited 2023 Met Gala red carpet concluded in the wee hours of Tuesday at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. With celebrities honouring legendary fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld with their outfits, we couldn’t get enough of the pearls, Chanel brides, and the largely monochromatic colour palette. Joining the list of Indian celebrities making heads turn at the event was Isha Ambani who paid homage to the late designer with an Indian touch.
The 31-year-old made a stunning appearance in a black draped gown inspired by the sari from designer Prabal Gurung’s atelier. The ensemble was replete with glittering pearls and featured a long flowy train. “One of fashion’s most prolific contributors, Karl Lagerfeld was paid homage to last night with the idea of a simple, powerful, line. Our vision for Isha Ambani’s look last night drew from Karl’s favourite colour palette with a smattering of pearls in a draped silhouette inspired by the sari from Prabal Gurung’s atelier,” stylist Priyanka Kapadia Badani wrote on Instagram.
Isha Ambani’s choice of accessory further elevated the look to the next level. Did you notice her statement Chanel bag? “You can’t think of Karl without a touch of humour, we dug into Isha Ambani’s Chanel archives and found the perfect companion for the look in a mini bag from the 2012 Paris Bombay collection,” Badani shared.
She teamed the look with exquisite diamond jewels by Lorraine Schwartz, including a choker, a layered neckpiece, a custom handpiece, earrings, and a ring. With her wavy hair left open, she added to the glam with sleek eyeliner, blushed and highlighted cheeks, and mauve lip colour.
Isha Ambani’s look, however, wasn’t the only representation of the Indian sari on the 2023 Met Gala red carpet. Supermodel Naomi Campbell, who has previously walked the runway in a sari, turned up in a rare Chanel archival look that was inspired by the sari, from the luxury brand’s spring/summer 2010 couture collection.
The salmon pink silky fabric of the sari was draped over a metallic blouse with silver embroidered trimmings. She accentuated this stunning look with silver arm cuffs and matching earrings. With her poker-straight hair cascading down beautifully, she completed the look with dewy makeup and metallic pink highlights.
