Actor Randeep Hooda got married to his partner Lin Laishram, a model-actor from Manipur, in Imphal in a traditional Meitei wedding on Wednesday, November 29 which was attended by close friends and family.
For the unversed, the Meitei are an ethnic community of people in Manipur.
A Meitei wedding, rooted in the cultural tapestry of Manipur, is a celebration that blends tradition, community, and ritual.
According to Akoijam Suranjoy Singh, a 25-year-old from Manipur, the bride and groom are looked to as Lord Krishna and Radha on their wedding day. He told indianexpress.com in an interaction that the songs sung on the day of the wedding, called Luhongba in the local Meitei dialect, are dedicated to Lord Krishna and Radha, as well. Recall that Hooda also mentioned taking a leaf out of the epic Mahabharat in the wedding invite shared on X, formerly Twitter. “Taking a leaf out of the Mahabharata where Arjuna married Manipuri Warrior Princess Chitrangada, We are getting married with the blessings of our families and friends,” he said.
The bride Lin was wearing the potloi skirt, which is a traditional garment made from sturdy fabric and bamboo. The drum-like Manipuri bridal dress has significant religious motifs hand-embroidered by skilled traditional weavers.
Interestingly, the potloi is sewn onto the bride a few hours before the wedding.
The potloi comes with a blouse, usually in a deep emerald green, a woven belt worn around the waist, and Innaphi, which is a delicate muslin shawl wrapped around the upper body. The gold ornaments and the headdress is worn to symbolise the bride as Radha is called Jhapa, Suranjoy shared.
Hooda was wearing a white dhoti with a traditional turban called Kokyet. He was also wearing a plain white shawl during the ceremony, which is a mark of purity and serenity.
According to what Suhas Chatterjee writes in his book A Socio-Economic History of South Assam since Hinduism among the Meitei ethnicity is brought from the Vaishnavism of Bengal, the Meitei Hindus weddings bear similarity to the traditional matrimonial style of the Bengalis.
