Polka dots might be one of the most popular patterns and prints loved by all in the world of fashion. Their fun, graphic nature makes them an evergreen staple among fashion enthusiasts worldwide. Coming in all shapes and sizes, they can easily elevate a simple look.
Commonly seen in children’s clothing, bathing suits, and lingerie, this playful print is seeing a resurgence with some of the major celebrities donning this trend. Recently, popstar Britney Spears too expressed her love for polka dots on social media.
“Polka dots have always been so much fun to wear in my opinion. It definitely adds a nice touch to any ensemble,” she said. Explaining where the pattern originated from, she added, “Have you ever wondered how they came to be? They’ve been around for centuries and guess what? The name comes from the Polka Dance.”
Further sharing the history of the print, Britney said, “You know that little thing we learned in school called the “Industrial Revolution”? Well, that’s when the first working sewing machine was built which finally made round even spaced dots. It is derived from the Czech peasant dance. 1900s Minnie Mouse debuted in polka dots.”
In a carousel of images, Britney presented her mood board of polka dots that features everything, from a photo of herself in a black polka dot monokini, a glimpse of Julia Roberts from the movie Pretty Woman, a picture of actor Cameron Diaz to another picture of Ashley Olsen.
The iconic print has had many famous takers over the years. “Thousands more wore polka dots as well as Marilyn Monroe, Lucille Ball (1950s), Goldie Hawn (1960s), Princess Diana, and Julia Roberts (1980s- 90s)!” Britney said.
The pop star ended her note showing her respect for polka dots that give “a hint of joy and happiness.” “I’m showing my respect to polka dots today because I feel they give a hint of joy and happiness when I put them on! Here’s a pic of me in early the 2000s with my polka dot bikini with the same reading glasses I have on today. I also did a pull of some of my current favorite polka dot wardrobe pieces today. Why? Because why not!” (sic)
Notably, the earliest known mention of the term polka dot was made in Godey’s Lady’s Book in 1857. Before this, the dotted pattern was referred to as quinconce or dotted Swiss. Subsequently, during the Industrial Revolution, sewing machines made the circular pattern possible because, before this, hand-sewing led to imperfectly rounded circles, creating a blotchy pattern.
The first time the trend came into the modern era was when the first Native American woman to be crowned Miss America, Norma Smallwood, wore a polka dot swimsuit in 1926. Soon, Walt Disney jumped on the bandwagon and redesigned Minnie Mouse’s dress with polka dots in the 1940s.
