Timeline of major blasts in India

Here’s look at some of the last major big blasts in India:

Rameshwaram Cafe blast in 2024

On March 1, 2024 a bomb blast rocked Rameshwaram Cafe located in Bengaluru’s Brookfield. Ten people were injured in the incident. The subsequent probe revealed that an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was used to trigger the blast.

Explosion In Bhopal-Ujjain Passenger Train

In March 2017, an explosion was reported inside the Bhopal-Ujjain passenger train in Madhya Pradesh’s Shajapur district. The blast occurred in a general coach of the train between 9.30 AM and 10 AM when it was on its way to Ujjain from Bhopal near Jabdi station.

The glass panes of the windows in the general coach were damaged because of the blast, which occurred when the train was about to reach Jabdi Station. Following the blast, the train came to a halt. Smoke engulfed the general coach, causing panic among the passengers who rushed out to save themselves.

2013 Bodhgaya blast

On July 7, 2013, terror struck one of the holiest Buddhist shrines in Bihar’s pilgrimage town of Bodhgaya as a series of blasts occurred at the Mahabodhi Temple complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Two monks were injured in the blasts. All the five accused in the case belong to terror group Indian Mujahideen.

2013 Hyderabad twin blasts

On February 21, 2013, the explosions carried out in Hyderabad’s Dilsukhnagar area had killed 18 people and injured 131 and the second triggered a few seconds later near a grocery store in the same area. The two cases relating to the blasts were transferred to NIA for investigation by the Ministry of Home Affairs the same year.

2011 Mumbai triple blasts case

Three blasts took place at Dadar, Zaveri Bazaar, and Opera House in Mumbai, killing 27 people and injuring over 100 on July 13, 2011. The investigating agency booked 11 people for the blast, including alleged members of the banned terrorist organisation, Indian Mujahideen (IM), for conspiring to commit blasts in central and south Mumbai.

2008 Delhi serial bomb blasts

On September 13, 2008, serial bomb blasts occurred at different places in the national capital – Karol Bagh, Connaught Place and Greater Kailash — resulting in the death of 26 persons and causing injury to 135 persons besides destruction of property. Additionally, three live bombs were also detected and defused.

2006 Mumbai train blast

On July 11, 2006, a series of bombs ripped through seven Western Suburban Railway or Mumbai local train coaches, killing 189 people and injuring 824. The blasts happened around 6:30 pm, during the evening rush hour in the overcrowded trains. The bombs were placed inside pressure cookers. The state police’s Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) began investigating the case.
