The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to restrain some political parties in Tamil Nadu from going ahead with their state-wide general strike on Wednesday calling for a ceasefire in Sri Lanka.
What (will) this court do. It is their right to express their feelings, a Bench comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justice P Sathasivam said in connection with a plea to declare the strike as illegal.
The Bench said it cannot pass any order and would hear the petition in the routine course on February 16.
The petition was filed by a Chennai-based Jayaneethi Saravna Satish Kumar seeking a direction from the court that the strike call given by Sri Lankan Tamils Protection movement,an umbrella organisation consisting of political parties like BJP,PMK,NCP and MDMK,be declared as illegal.
The Bench decided not to pass any order after the counsel appearing for the petitioner submitted that the bandh has been called by smaller parties in the state.
