MP and senior People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader Muzaffar Hussain Baig is facing severe criticism from both the separatists and the National Conference over his remarks on West Pakistan refugees in Jammu and Kashmir. Distancing itself, the PDP has termed it as Baig’s “personal opinion.”

“What Baig said is his personal opinion not the party stand,’’ PDP spokesman Nayeem Akthar said. Baig, MP from North Kashmir’s Baramulla constituency, had said that West Pakistan refugees living in Jammu and Kashmir should be tackled on humanitarian grounds and a middle path should be adopted to give them a new hope. The statement came a day after the BJP had said the issue should be settled on humanitarian grounds.

The National Conference termed the PDP MP’s remarks as “absurd”. “Baig, who claims himself as an expert of law, should go through the law and then issues such statements,’’ NC general secretary Ali Mohammad Sager said. He termed it a ploy of the PDP to show sympathy towards the BJP with whom they are forging an alliance. “The political issues on which the PDP is now speaking are extremely dangerous for the unity of the state,’’ he said.

Hurriyat chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said: “Baig’s statement on the West Pakistani refuges is portraying his lust for power. The statement has no political, legal or moral standing.’’ He added that if Baig is concerned about the refugees, he should ask the government of India to settle them elsewhere in the country.

Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chairman Yasin Malik said the statement of the PDP MP is to appease the RSS leadership. “He (Baig) wants to get a cabinet berth in the Centre, which is why he issuing such silly statements.’’

The Hurriyat Conference led by Syed Ali Geelani also condemned Baig’s statement. “Baig should recall the Constitution of J&K that debars permanent settlement of any Indian citizen  in the Jammu and Kashmir,’’ spokesperson G Ayaz Akbar said.
