The security cover for special public prosecutor Avinash Rasal, representing the National Investigation Agency in the 2008 Malegaon blast case, has been removed, it is learnt.

Rasal was provided with round-the-clock security in May after a police review meeting ahead of the filing of the second supplementary chargesheet in the case on May 13 indicated a threat to his life. Rasal said two constables had been assigned to his home while one travelled with him. Last week, the constables were withdrawn without any intimation, he said.

It is learnt that Rasal’s security had been removed for a few days even earlier, but it was eventually reinstated. While official sources said the reason was shortage of staff at the local police station (Khar), senior inspector Ramchandra Jadhav of Khar police station said the security had not been removed but reduced to one personnel.
