Instability has rocked the Congress government in Arunachal Pradesh amid heightened speculation that its chief minister Pema Khandu along with two-thirds of party MLAs may cross over to the regional People’s Party of Arunachal.
Sources in Itanagar told The Indian Express that the speculation comes at a time when the government is stretched for resources. The Congress has 44 members in 60 seats in the Arunachal Assembly. The source close to the chief minister told The Indian Express, “CM Khandu will join PPA very soon.”

Once Khandu and his supporter MLAs join PPA, then it will become part of North-East Democratic Alliance which was formed in May 2016 by BJP president Amit Shah. It is currently run by Himanta Biswa Sarma, the BJP minister from Assam.
Peoples Party of Arunachal, a regional political party, was founded in 1979. Late Chief minister Kalikho Pul, a Congress minister in the Nabam Tuki cabinet, had joined the same PPA in February 2016 along with 24 Congressmen. That Khandu is set to join PPA and not the BJP suggests that the national party wants to keep defecting Congress MLAs at safe distance after the Supreme Court verdict which severely criticised Central government’s political actions terming it “unconstitutional.”
