Rahul Gandhi capable to be India's PM: Shiv Sena's Sanjay Raut

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut on Saturday said Congress leader Rahul Gandhi leading the Bharat Jodo Yatra is capable to be the prime minister of India and no third front will be successful sans the grand old party.

He said the purpose of Gandhi's Yatra from Kanyakumari to Kashmir is to remove the hatred and fear and not to unite the opposition parties under the banner of his party. “Ideological and political differences apart, he (Gandhi) will show his leadership qualities and will be a big challenge (for the ruling BJP in 2024 general elections). He will make a miracle,” the Member of Parliament told news agency PTI.

Raut, who walked for nearly 13-km alongside Gandhi between Hatli Morh and Chandwal amid rain on Friday, said the BJP has spread a wrong notion about the Congress leader but this Yatra has busted all their myths about him. (PTI)

Opinion | BJP wants us to live in a reimagined past, Bharat Jodo Yatra is about our future

As the Bharat Jodo Yatra enters its final stretch in Jammu and Kashmir, Union Minister Jitendra Singh has taken on the task of denigrating the Indian National Congress and the yatra ('A wayward yatra and Kashmir', The Indian Express, January 20). In the process, he has joined a long list of BJP ‘distorians’ who use a selective reading of history and fabrication of current reality to promote the BJP’s dystopian vision. In a desperate attempt to distract from the government’s colossal failures, decimation of institutions, and rampant cronyism, Singh misrepresents an endeavor that is about unifying the country, promoting harmony, and defending the Constitution. Nevertheless, in true BJP fashion, he hides more than he reveals. The BJP wants us to live in a reimagined past. The Bharat Jodo Yatra is about our future.

Singh regurgitates the usual talking points of the BJP on Article 370. There is nothing new there. The important constitutional question about the abrogation of Article 370 is with the Supreme Court. When Singh bashes Nehru for not allowing Sardar Patel to deal with Jammu and Kashmir the way he dealt with other princely states, he conveniently omits the fact that Patel once mooted the idea of giving Kashmir to Pakistan in exchange for Hyderabad. In calling the inclusion of Article 370 in the Constitution “misguided”, Singh manages to insult all our founders including Babasaheb Ambedkar, Sardar Patel, and even Syama Prasad Mookerjee, the founder of the Jana Sangh. Unless, of course, the BJP believes that the Constitution was the work of one supreme individual who towered over everyone else. Read the Express Opinion by Amitabh Dubey and Salman Soz

Rahul’s windcheater in Jammu rain triggers fresh debate on T-shirt look

As photographs of Rahul wearing a windcheater in the rain went viral, a sort of debate started on social media whether the winter chill in Jammu had finally made the Congress leader “shiver and cover himself up”. Choudhary Lal Singh, the one supporter Rahul Yatra could have done without in J&K

Dogra Swabhiman Sangathan chairman Choudhary Lal Singh, whose decision to join the Bharat Jodo Yatra has brought the Jammu and Kashmir leg of Rahul Gandhi’s march under a cloud, has been with both the Congress and BJP and never been far from controversy.

It’s his support for the accused in the 2018 gangrape and murder of an eight-year-old tribal Bakerwal girl in Kathua that is now being used by opponents to attack the Yatra.

A minister in the then BJP-PDP government at the time, Lal Singh had joined a rally organised by the family members of the accused, along with senior Cabinet colleague Chander Parkash Ganga, and supported their demand for a CBI probe into the matter. (Read More)

Farooq Abdullah compares Rahul Gandhi to Adi Shankaracharya

As Bharat Jodo Yatra, led by Rahul Gandhi, entered the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, the National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah likened the Congress MP with the Vedic scholar, Adi Shankaracharya.

This is for the second time during the foot march that Rahul Gandhi has been compared to a figure on a high pedestal -- first with Lord Ram and now Shankaracharya.

Drawing parallels while addressing the public meeting in Jammu and Kashmir's Lakhanpur, Abdullah, who served as the Chief Minister when Jammu and Kashmir was a state, said that Rahul Gandhi is the first person after Shankaracharya to have undertaken a yatra from Kanyakumari to Kashmir.

"Centuries ago Shankaracharya came here. He walked when there were no roads but jungles. He had walked from Kanyakumari to Kashmir. Rahul Gandhi is the second person who took out a yatra from the same Kanyakumari and is reaching Kashmir," Abdullah said. The octogenarian leader further said that the aim of this yatra is to unite India. (PTI)

Sanjay Raut joins Bharat Jodo Yatra in Jammu, says only Rahul Gandhi can take on Modi in 2024

Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut joined the last leg of the Bharat Jodo Yatra in Jammu on Friday and said an Opposition front without the Congress would be meaningless and that only Rahul Gandhi could challenge Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2024 and end the BJP’s “dictatorial regime”.

“The Opposition parties are trying to come together under a single banner. Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao seems to have taken an initiative in this direction. At a meeting convened by Rao, Akhilesh Yadav, Arvind Kejriwal and Pinarayi Vijayan were present. But these leaders are heading regional parties and trying to keep the Congress away. Bharat Jodo Yatra: A wayward yatra and Kashmir

The ill-conceived “Bharat Jodo Yatra” led by Rahul Gandhi cannot redeem the Congress party’s missed opportunity in Kashmir. Beginning from the dawn of independence, for over six decades to follow, the Congress leadership had an opportunity which it squandered through a series of self-righteous retrogressive experiments, starting from what history records as the infamous “Nehruvian” blunder.

Now that the course correction has been effectively accomplished by Prime Minister Narendra Modi by abrogating Article 370, exercising zero tolerance against Pakistan-sponsored terrorism, and mainstreaming Jammu and Kashmir not only physically but even in the hearts and minds, the Congress has once again sought to rekindle the inglorious past in a vain bid to revive Rahul Gandhi’s extinct. Cong's Bharat Jodo Yatra only betrays its discomfiture with normalcy having returned to J-K: Jitendra Singh

Union Minister Jitendra Singh on Thursday alleged that the Congress' Bharat Jodo Yatra only betrays their discomfiture with normalcy having returned to Jammu and Kashmir because the party and its allies have developed a "vested interest" in the continuation of terrorism and unrest to ensure they continue to thrive by getting elected, generation after generation.

He said the common man walking on the streets of Srinagar wants to be a part of the India journey led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and after having come out of a nightmare of three decades, he is not ready to be thrown back into the same mayhem of violence and destruction.

Singh, the Minister of State for Personnel, said Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and his colleagues should read the history and take a cue from the Ekta yatra taken out by the BJP in early 1992 which culminated in hoisting of the tricolor at Lal Chowk in Srinagar. "The intent of that yatra was to send out a message across the country and also internationally that nationalist forces in India would never allow J&K to be separated from India in spite of the divisive politics of the Congress coupled with machinations of Pakistan," he said. Octogenarians reach Lakhanpur to welcome Bharat Jodo Yatra in J&K

Octogenarians Puran Chand and Mohammad Ismail walked several kilometres from their homes to welcome Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Yatra into Jammu and Kashmir for its final phase Thursday.

Otherwise bustling with in and out-bound vehicles round-the-clock, the Lakhanpur entry point bordering Punjab's Pathankot has been completely sealed by police with Congress workers led by senior leaders making final arrangements for the flag handover ceremony, marking the commencement of the yatra in the Union Territory.

Traffic was diverted through other routes, while the eight-km stretch of Jammu-Pathankot highway from Lakhanpur to Hatli Morh was placed out of bounds as part of the stringent security arrangements in connection with the foot march.

After the flag handover ceremony scheduled to take place at 5.45 pm at the venue which was decorated with hoardings, life-size posters and tricolours, Gandhi will start the yatra from Hatli Morh the next day. After covering Samba, Jammu, Udhampur, Anantnag and Pulwama, the yatra is scheduled to end with Gandhi hoisting the national flag at the party headquarters in Srinagar on January 30. (PTI)

Stand by family of Kathua rape case victim, says J-K Cong day after its spokesperson resigned

Jammu and Kashmir Congress Wednesday said it stands by the family of Kathua rape case victim after its spokesperson Deepika Pushkar Nath resigned from the party over its decision to "allow" an ex-minister, who had allegedly defended the accused, to join the Bharat Jodo Yatra.

Nath, a lawyer by profession, had said on Tuesday that she is leaving the Congress on "ideological grounds" as former minister Lal Singh, who is also the chairman of Dogra Swabhiman Sangathan Party (DSSP), was responsible in sabotaging the 2018 Kathua rape case by "brazenly defending" rapists of the eight-year-old nomadic girl.

"She (Deepika) announced her decision to resign from the party on Twitter. The high command has taken note and will decide on it. "However, the stand of our party on the rape and murder case is crystal clear as we stand with the family of the victim and have always favoured a fair probe to bring the culprits to book," J&K Pradesh Congress Committee chief spokesperson Ravinder Sharma told PTI.

“We do not believe in the agenda of the RSS to hoist the Tricolour at Lal Chowk, where it has already flown high,” Patil said when asked about the plan for Rahul to hoist the national flag on the culmination of the Bharat Jodo Yatra on January 30.

The main function to mark the culmination of the Yatra will be held at Sher-i-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC), Srinagar.
