The police in Andhra Pradesh’s Chittoor district Monday arrested a couple and their relatives after they allegedly tied up a woman to a tree and thrashed her over defaulting on a loan her husband, a daily wage labourer, had taken.
The incident occurred in Narayanapuram village in Kuppam mandal, which is the constituency of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu.
The police said that the woman, identified as Sirisha, 28, was dragged from her house in front of her two children by S Manikappa, allegedly a Telugu Desam Party (TDP) member, on Monday.
According to the police, R Timappa, the woman’s husband, reportedly took a loan of Rs 80,000 from Manikappa of the same village two years ago, and has been paying it in small monthly installments.
Timappa recently fled to Bengaluru, where he found work as a construction labourer, the police said, adding that he had stopped paying the money to Manikappa.
“Manikappa tied her to a tree and demanded money. His wife and sister-in-law ended up assaulting Sirisha. We have rescued Sirisha and registered a case under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections 341, 323, 324, 606, and 34,’’ said a police officer.
Sirisha and her children had also allegedly fled to Bengaluru, and she returned to her village on Monday to seek school transfer certificates for them.
A viral video of the incident that surfaced on Tuesday shows Manikappa’s wife Munemma slapping and hitting Sirisha despite villagers trying to stop her.
The police said that Manikappa and five members of his family and relatives have been arrested in the case.
