Latin pop star Shakira surprised everyone with a special performance of her iconic song Hips Don’t Lie during the latest episode of The Tonight Show. Hosted by comedian Jimmy Fallon, this particular episode coincided with the 20th anniversary of Shakira’s song. The studio audience was visibly taken aback when the singer walked out and started her performance with mesmerising moves and a cadence and attitude which turned back the clock.
Fans were in for another surprise as the Haitian rapper and singer Wyclef Jean also walked out to perform his part of the song. Released in 2006, in the reissue of her album Oral Fixation, Vol 2, the song was a reinterpretation of a previous song by Jean, called ‘Dance Like This’, which featured singer Claudette Ortiz. It was notably a part of the official soundtrack for the movie Dirty Dancing 2. Both Shakira and Jean collaborated on the lyrics, while the production side of it included other artists as well.
The track remains today Shakira’s biggest hit, as it dominated charts upon its release and maintained its position for a long time. It is the singer’s only single to hit no. 1 on the US Billboard Top 100 and also claimed the top spot in 55 other countries. According to RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America), the song reached the status of quadruple platinum, and after considering its total downloads including ringtones, it is one of the most successful singles of all time.
After the performance, Jimmy bowed down to both the performers and yelled, “That is how you do it,” as he announced that the US leg of Shakira’s latest world tour will begin next week. Notably, Shakira opened her World Tour in Rio De Janeiro wearing an outift designed by an Indian designer Anamika Khanna. She was again on the radar of Indian fans this week, as she met with Priyanka Chopra and Diljit Dosanjh at the Met Gala, and even carpooled with the latter.
Other guests on the Tuesday episode also included comedian Nate Bargatze and the iconic actress Lorraine Bracco, known for her role in the hit HBO series The Sopranos and the Martin Scorsese classic Goodfellas, alongside Ray Liotta, Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci.
