After the government failed to address the concerns of producers and distributors in Kerala, several film bodies in the state have announced a strike starting June 1. The protest is in response to significant financial losses faced by producers and distributors due to the high entertainment tax and escalating actor remuneration.

Speaking to the media, former actor and Kerala Film Chamber of Commerce president G Suresh Kumar said the producers in the state are burdened by double taxation from entertainment and GST taxes levied on film tickets.

As part of the strike, the film bodies have reportedly decided to suspend all film shoots and screening of movies in effect from June 1. Besides the concern about double taxation, the producers are also upset about stars demanding huge remuneration.

G Suresh said about 60 per cent of the money in filmmaking is spent on the remuneration of actors alone. He claimed the Malayalam film industry incurred over Rs 100 crore losses alone in January with only Asif Ali’s Rekhachithram being able to make money at the box office out of 28 movies that released last month.

He also threatened to reveal the remuneration of some of the highest paid actors if the need arises.

Before the strike, the film bodies will reportedly meet Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan with a memorandum, addressing their needs. The meeting will be attended by the representatives of the various film bodies in the state.
