Kathanar first look: While Malayalam cinema is riding high with the success of the superhero film Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra, which opened to rave reviews, a new update regarding an upcoming movie has arrived, piquing the audience’s excitement. In a major reveal, the makers of the highly anticipated fantasy thriller Kathanar: The Wild Sorcerer have unveiled the titular character’s first-look poster, promising a never-before-seen experience.
Based on the legends surrounding Kadamattathu Kathanar, a Christian priest believed to have been endowed with magical powers and lived in the ninth century, the first-look poster offers a captivating and microcosmic glimpse of the thriller, marking a fine blend of myth and horror. In the poster, actor Jayasurya, playing Kadamattathu Kathanar, can be seen standing at the edge of a cliff draped in black and blood-red aerial roots. The rugged texture of the rock suggests that it’s located somewhere remote and secluded. Sporting long hair and a beard, his attire emphasises that Kathanar is not merely a priest, but also a warrior who battles evil forces.
Helmed by Rojin Thomas, renowned for directing movies like Home (2021) and Philips and the Monkey Pen (2013), Kathanar also features South Indian superstar Anushka Shetty in a key role. Although the project’s first part was initially scheduled to hit the screens in 2024, it was delayed inordinately. With the release of this first-look poster, unveiled on the occasion of Jayasurya’s birthday, the movie is now expected to be released sometime this year. Penned by R Ramanand, Kathanar boasts cinematography by Neil D’Cunha and music by Rahul Subrahmanian, with Rojin himself handling the editing.
