Karam, directed by Vineeth Sreenivasan, is set to release on September 25. With this film, Vineeth appears to be returning to a darker, edgier space reminiscent of his most underrated directorial to date, Thira (2013). In a recent interview, the actor-filmmaker explained why he chose to take on Karam after a string of feel-good films. He also spoke about his confidence in scriptwriter and lead actor Noble Thomas, and his decision to promote the film with the tagline, “from the director of Thira.”

Recalling the inception of Karam in an interaction with Cue Studio, Vineeth said, “In 2023, a year before Varshangalkku Shesham’s release, Noble Thomas had been going around narrating a story for him to direct and star in. I had heard this story. I really liked the script even from the initial drafts. So once I asked him if he would be willing to wait a year till Varshangalkku Shesham releases for me to make that film myself. Noble was happy and said, ‘If you are doing it, I will wait for one year.’ That is how Karam came to me as a project.”

Vineeth Sreenivasan also reflected on the cult status of his earlier thriller Thira and shared how it inspired him to take a similar risk with Karam. Vineeth said, “Thira is a very personal film for me. I still remember all the reviews I got for that film the first day. Even Noble Thomas and Nivin Pauly, who watched that film, told me they could not emotionally connect with Thira. Even though that film did not do well in theatres, online, the reviews were great. People were all raving, and somehow that film has such a long shelf life in DVDs and telegram viewing. I have never imagined in my life that I would use the tagline ‘from the director of Thira’ in another film and people would respond so enthusiastically to that.”

He added, “A film which we considered a failure in its time, reminded me that it was not actually one, when I saw people’s reaction to Karam’s promotional material. Still, people see me and rave about that film and ask me for the sequel. It’s unexplainable for me.”

Lastly, Vineeth Sreenivasan spoke about the casting of Noble Thomas in Karam. “Right from when Noble narrated the character Dev Mahendran from the script of Karam, I knew that he would be the perfect fit for the role. Noble’s narration was my sole reference for the film, so I had no doubts about casting him as the lead. He had the whole film in his head.”
