The re-release of Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather Trilogy at PVR INOX cinemas across India in the coming months is an opportunity to watch the movies in 4K restored versions that cinephiles might find hard to refuse. The Godfather I (1972) is releasing on September 12, The Godfather Part II (1974) releasing on October 17 (1990) and The Godfather Part III on November 14.

Considered to be one of the greatest cinematic masterpieces, the trilogy is an epic tale of power, family, and betrayal. It chronicles the Corleone family under patriarch and mafia don Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando) and the transformation of his youngest son, Michael Corleone (Al Pacino), from a soldier to ruthless mafia boss. The trilogy of crime films, inspired by the 1969 novel of the same name by Italian American author Mario Puzo, created an enduring impact on cinema for its masterful storytelling, iconic performances and technical excellence. The film’s stellar ensemble cast features Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, Diane Keaton and Robert De Niro.

Talking about the re-release, Niharika Bijli, Lead Strategist, PVR INOX Ltd., said, “At PVR INOX, our constant endeavour is to curate the finest cinematic experiences. The Godfather trilogy remains the gold standard of cinematic storytelling — a masterclass in performance, direction, and narrative depth. Loved by generations across the globe, it has inspired countless filmmakers and cinephiles. For the first time in India, audiences will experience these iconic films on the big screen in close succession. For the younger generation, it is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to discover the brilliance of The Godfather on the big screen. For those who’ve loved it for decades, it’s a homecoming.”

The first instalment of the trilogy, also the most acclaimed and popular, is about reluctant Michael’s rise as a don and taking over his family business. The film, which emerged as the highest grossing release of 1972, also won five Golden Globe and three Oscar awards.
Its sequel follows the story of Michael’s as the new Don and head of the Corleone family in the aftermath of an attempt on his life. The Godfather II had a parallel track that told the story of young Vito Corleone (essayed by Robert De Niro), from his Sicilian childhood to his establishing his family business in New York City.

After refusing multiple offers, Coppola returned to make the third film of the trilogy, which he called an “epilogue”, due to the financial trouble he was facing at that time. The Godfather III is about Michael’s attempt to legitimise his criminal empire even as his brother Sonny’s son Vincent challenges him.
