Thor: Ragnarok (2017) is arguably one of the most beloved Marvel movies of all time. While it may not have achieved the same level of box office success as the Avengers films, Ragnarok successfully revitalised the Thor series, with director Taika Waititi’s colourful aesthetic, and tongue-in-cheek tone.

However, the filmmaker’s follow-up, Thor: Love and Thunder (2022), didn’t attract the same love, either commercially or critically. In an interview, Hemsworth admitted that the movie might have been “too silly,” and that his perspective on it might be slightly skewed. He shared an uncomfortable story about how his children’s friends voiced their disapproval of the film to him.

He told GQ, “It’s a bunch of eight-year-olds critiquing my film. ‘We thought this one had too much humour, the action was cool but the VFX weren’t as good,’ they said. I cringe and laugh equally at it. I think we just had too much fun. It just became too silly. It’s always hard being in the centre of it and having any real perspective… I love the process, it’s always a ride. But you just don’t know how people are going to respond.”

The actor admitted that he has a tendency to get bored of the character every few years, but didn’t entirely rule out a return. “I love the experience. I love the fact that I’ve been able to do something fairly different throughout the process. Thor 1 and 2 were their own thing, Thor 3 and 4 were a very different feel… and then even Avengers, the Lebowski Thor, the Infinity War Thor, due to different directors and I think mostly my own need to do something different. You know, I got sick of the character pretty quick every couple of years,” Hemsworth said.

Though the actor is open to returning as Thor after “seeing what they have to offer creatively and if there is something new” for the character, Hemsworth said: “But I really wanna do some other stuff for a while.”

“Thor required me to come in and look a certain way, and it was mostly, sort of, aesthetic bodywork, whereas this, there was a far greater athleticism needed,” he recalled.

Hemsworth will be next seen in the action thriller film Extraction 2, directed by Sam Hargrave, in which the Australian actor will appear alongside Golshifteh Farahani, Adam Bessa, Olga Kurylenko and Tinatin Dalakishvili.
