Actor Suhani Bhatnagar, who starred as child Babita Kumari Phogat in Aamir Khan’s Dangal, passed away on Friday. Suhani, who was 19-years-old, reportedly suffered medical complications. She had previously spoken about why she didn’t sign any films after Dangal became a blockbuster, and said that she wanted to do lead roles after completing her studies.
In an interview with TV India Live almost two years ago, Suhani was asked why she didn’t capitalise on the success of Dangal and sign more films. She said in Hindi, “Apart from the films, I have done shoots, fashion shows and events. But right now, I am not focusing on films because I am concentrating on my studies. I am in 10th grade right now. After my basic education, for sure I want to do films, and I want to star as the lead.”
When pressed about doing more films, Suhani said, “I want to finish my education, and after that I want to be seen as a main lead in films. But if I get any opportunities between my studies, I will surely do it. Until then, I will only concentrate on my studies.”
Aamir Khan Productions mourned her passing, and said in a statement posted on social media, “We are deeply saddened to hear about our Suhani passing away. Our heartfelt condolences to her mother Poojaji, and the entire family. Such a talented young girl, such a team player, Dangal would have been incomplete without Suhani. Suhani, you will always remain a star in our hearts. May you rest in peace.”
Co-star Zaira Wasim told Bombay Times that she is not able to believe the news and added that she had a flashback of all the good times she spent with Suhani. She also remembered Suhani’s parents and sent them strength in these tough times.
Dangal director Nitesh Tiwari said in a statement, “Suhani’s passing away is absolutely shocking and heartbreaking. She was such a happy soul, so full of life. My deepest condolences to her family.”
In the film Dangal, Zaira Wasim played the young Geeta Phogat, while Suhani played the character of Babita. The adult versions of these characters were played by Fatima Sana Shaikh and Sanya Malhotra, respectively. Aamir took on the role of their father, Mahavir Phogat.
