Jameel Khan, who is currently in the news for his role as Santosh Mishra in the popular series Gullak, was also a part of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s 1999 film Hum Dil Chuke Sanam. This was one of Jameel’s initial films while he was busy with theatre and avoided camera. In an exclusive conversation with the indianexpress.com, the Gangs Of Wasseypur actor recalled his time working with Sanjay Leela Bhansali. He revealed while he was working with the filmmaker, he was unhappy with his role in the film and told the ace director, “Sir, role mein kuch dum hai nahi.”

During the conversation, Jameel recalled landing a role in the Salman Khan-Aishwarya Rai Bachchan starrer. He said, “When I was doing my MA, I had started working in theatre with Naseeruddin Shah and his group Motley. Someone from his group named Ken Phillips, he was assisting Sanjay Leela Bhansali, and they were in need of theatre actors. And that’s how I got it, I did it and earned money.”

Sharing his experience working with the Heeramandi director, Jameel said, “Sanjay’s films are long drawn as he works for details and he is stickler for good work. In fact, call it my immaturity or naivety, I remember once telling him during the shoot of Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, ‘Sir, role mein kuch dum hai nahi. It’s very hard to wake up in the morning and make myself come on the sets. ‘Bahaut mushkil se mujhe apne aap ko manana padta hai ki shoot karne jaana hai yaar (I have to convince myself that I have to go and do this)’. He was like, ‘I am sorry you feel like that but what can I do, there’s not much in this role’.”

He added, “But, he kept that in mind and cast me in Ram Leela after many years. And Sanjay is a beautiful director and a nice person. I don’t know why people say he is very insecure and that he shouts and beats people. I have witnessed he loves his actors, his art, his craft and the love for his work. He worships filmmaking and anyone who has talent. I think ‘Jo daant khaate hai, isiliye khaate honge kyuki ap bewakoofi aur galti karte hai’. ‘Daant khao na phir agar kaam nai kar rahe ho dhang se toh (People must be scolded because they must be making mistakes. If you are not working properly then you will be pulled up)’ that too is a blessing in disguise.”

In Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela, Jameel was given the role of Vanka, a police personnel.
